Description of Our Community: The diverse and multifaceted marketing of Sun Moon Lake has resulted in astonishing success in generating tourist traffic, along with stimulating deeper tourism and eco-tourism in recent years which not introduce the beautiful environs of Sun Moon Lake, however the environmental consequences of this tourism growth have meant the Thao Nation traditional lifestyles have come under persistent and pervasive threats of Sinicization, which has adversely impacted Thao cultural transmission. The Thao Nation is the smallest among Taiwan’s indigenous nations, with most members living in Yuchi Township and Shuili Township in Nantou County. The Thao Nation have many unique cultural attributes such as their “pestle song” and belief in their “ancestral spirits basket”.
Project Description: The Thao Nation’s language is unwritten, and is a threatened language as a result of the onslaught of outside forces, but the Thao oral literature is rich with myths and legends, the story of hunting for deer, rhymes and songs, and blessings, which express much of the Thao Nation ancestral history and heritage, faith and traditional culture. The cultural transmission of their oral literature may allow the Thao Nation and the rest of the world to better appreciate their cultural characteristics. While the population of the Thao Nation is small in numbers, they have a robust wealth of oral literature, but in recent years the Thao language and culture have become subject to the threat of loss, and with population decline, this has meant the Thao Nation and its cultural sustainability have become seriously threatened. It hopes to turn Thao Nation Myths and Legends into an educational ground of local cultures by recreating historic scenes and organizing educational activities, as well as to pass on the local culture by introducing the historical development, local life styles and unique industries in Thao Nation Myths and Legends.
