Description of Our Community: Huatan Township, located in Changhua County in Taiwan, is a small town near the mountains, covering an area of 34.193 square kilometers . Positioned geographically between a tableland and a plain, Huatan possesses rich groundwater resources, which makes it an ideal place to cultivate various crops in every season. Traditional agricultural products are quite popular and famous, including jasmines, bamboo shoots, pomelos, carambolas, Asian mugworts, reishi, and mangoes. Recently, there has been a special festival in Huatan Township, which is called Jasmine and Bamboo shoot Festival and held to promote those agricultural products, especially jasmines and bamboo shoots.

Project Description: Huatan represents “parette” in Mandarin and is called the home to jasmines. However, besides the most well-known product mentioned above, it is also one of the most largest places of origin of bamboo shoots. It is a pity that few people know Baishakeng, a small village in Huatan, provides bamboo shoots of great quality and huge quantity. From March to October every year, there are always fresh and delicious bamboo shoots everywhere, from bamboo groves to markets. Nevertheless, the number of bamboo farmers is declining gradually nowadays. Therefore, in our study, we try to preserve the tradition by interviewing bamboo farmers, getting into bamboo groves to observe the plants and the products there, and doing customer questionnaire survey in Changhua Sanmin Market. We would like to share what we learned, including how the bamboos are grown, what problem might occur, and what reproduced products bamboo farmers make.
