Description of Our Community: Kaohsiung Ciaotou Sugar Refinery which was used to be called Qiaotou. Japanese built the first modern sugar refinery in Taiwan. It is the biggest ancient monument as well as the fifth cultural landscape in Taiwan. Because of the development of new towns and roads,the high-rise buildings surrounded around low huts and red-tile houses.

From 2001 to 2008,with central and region goverment’s subsidy,there was planned to be an art village,offerred artists to station in and creat. After goverment stopped to subsidize,some literature-history workers and artists set up the company and rented land on their own so as to continue energy of art creation of Ciaotou Sugar Refinery .

In 2012,By Wood Art Village was certificated to be a formal environmental education facility by Environmental Protection Administration,which is combined with art and ecology,hoping to share the art of low carbon life with people who visit By Wood.

Project Description: Founded in 2008, Bywood states its goal as “preserving Taiwan’s traditional art&culture”. Built in 1901, the original location of Bywood was a Japanese guest house in Kio-A-Thou Sugar Refinery, which was the first sugar refinery, as well as the biggest protected historical site in Taiwan. In 2012, Bywood was certificated as an art&enviromental-educatoin facility, provided environmental aesthetics experiences, hoping to bring changes to the land. As the only century-long art&cultural heritage in Southern Taiwan, Bywood could be hold outdoor art-wedding ceremonies as well since 2013.
