Description of Our Community: Houtong, located in Taipei City Rueifang district Guangfu village, use to be a mining industry but as that came to an end, most residents emigrated to elsewhere and left behind the cats who once had been theirs, lucky the cats were regularly fed by those who had not left the village, time after time, this village eventually became the heaven for stray cats and through sweat and tears, Houtong is now one of the most popular tourist destinations! Houtong cat village is the one and the only cat themed village in Taiwan, every cat is a supermodel through the lenses of the numerous cameras of tourists, there has even been a top four best model competition! The Taiwan tourist bureau, the ministry of agriculture and the animal protection epidemic prevention station has established an information center on raising cats and animal protection, they also cooperate with local cat loving organizations to help with animal quarantine. The creatively designed cat bridge which allows cats and humans to use it simultaneously has attracted more and more international tourists to visit this village, boosting Houtong’s economy, it has even made onto the top 6 most visited cat themed villages chart from the CNN!

Project Description: Jian Pei-Ling is the famous blogger Madame Kitty. At first she only had to shoot photos for the website of her husband’s animal hospital, but she gradually grew fond of the cats herself. Madame Kitty believes that in order to make Houtong a better place you must start overcoming the problem of stray cats within the community, because of this she started caring for stray cats and the elderly who live alone, taught residents proper health education knowledge so that they could feed the stray cats properly and make the environment even more cat friendly. Madame Kitty also documented the beauty of Houtong and cats with her camera, letting more and more people know about it, she even initiated an activity amongst the blogging community known as “With cats we stand, Houtong’s beauty presented”, calling out to volunteers to help clean up the community. Who would have thought that a small act of love and kindness could bring together so many volunteers and locals to work towards improving Houtong’s environmental conditions, now after hard work the streets are cleaner and the cats are healthier, tourism has shot up making the economy better, Madame Kitty really did change the fate of the village through the lens of her camera and the love in her heart, Houtong went from merely a mining ghost town to a heaven for cats!
