Description of Our Community: Yuanlin Township (hearafter refer to Yuanlin) used to be an important geographical spot where Taichung City Hall located. Because the town is closed to Bagua Mountain region, it therefore became a key to connection of Nantau County to western plain (known as Choshuishi Plain). Since Yualin has been built in 285 years ago, there are many cultural and historical sites in this town, hidden in the urban jungle, nearby the streets, or deeply in a small alley. Moreover, located in the middle of Bagua Mountain region and Chunghua Plain with Babao Irrigation Canal running through, Yuanlin also cultivates many produces and products. In the early days, Yuanlin was super famous for its tangerines and Baiguo preserved fruits. Although the fame of Baiguo Mountain and those golden days has faded away, you still can find many Yuanlin-manufactured saccades in grocery stores nowadays. Oh, let’s not forget those quick snacks. Before, people here used to eat a bowl of stewed pork rice and miso soup for breakfast, and thick rice noodles for supper to energize themselves. Now, besides those tasty foods, sticky rice, chicken feet jelly, and riceball with curshed ice are also Yuanlin locals’ favorite.

The best way to enjoy Yuanlin is to slow down your pace, ride on U-bike, to explore this town with not only tires and bike industry, but also with many amazing wonders.

Project Description: Origins: With the development of technology, we are at the high tech era where everybody has many 3C products on hand. Things we use and things we wear are all machine manufactured. Gradually, people forgot how to make things by bare hands, and no longer valued craftsmen’s work of art. Many traditional handicrafts techniques are replaced by machine. Those irreplaceable are edged out by substitutes. Gradually, the locals like us are also leaving our history of hometown behind. We can tell people where any of the historical sites in our hometown is, yet, we can’t tell people any story of our hometown. That is just the case of “The Bamboo Hat”. Our ancestors weaved the bamboo hats for money to raise kids. It is this grand handicraft that cultivated the lives for generation, and weaved the history of us. It is left alone for us to explore- to explore the magnificent traditional techniques like bamboo hat and more, and to explore the stories of older generations.
