Description of Our Community: Our school, Yongchun Elementary School, is located in Taipei City Xinyi District. There is a lively Wufenpu business area nearby, as well as scenic spots like the Keelung River, Songshan Station, which is the third largest train station in Taipei. Taipei is a basin in geography. Xinyi District is the downtown area of Taipei and therefore has many skyscrapers nearby. It is very convenient in terms of transportation, and has a population of 233,000. In 1920, during the Japanese Occupation Period, the local jurisdiction reform of Taiwan adopted the system of streets and villages. “Matsuyama Village”, which is under the jurisdiction of Taipei Prefecture Shichisei District was set up then. In 1938, Matsuyama Village became a part of Taipei. In late 1980s, Songshan District then was still Matsuyama Village, whose population reached over 450,000, which was one fifth of the population in Taipei. With a jurisdiction area of 49km, it is not only Taipei’s largest area in population, but also the administrative area that has most permanent government staff. When Taipei was divided into 12 areas from the original 16 in 1990, the areas in Songshan, which are to the south of the railway, formed into the independent Xinyi District.

Project Description: Everyone has his hometown; so we understand the great importance of hometown. We choose Songshan Station and Wufenpu as our topic. Through investigation into the history and paying visits to relevant people, we have learned more about the city that we have been familiar with ever since we were kids. Songshan Station is one of the top three train station in the world. It brings the location great convenience in transportation and numerous sightseers, thus promoting the economic development of that area. It was once a big ditch and was very inconvenient in terms of transportation. It was until the Qing Dynasty that Liu Ming-chuan built the first railway there, and mobilized the transportation nearby. Back then, the station was called Sigau. Under the early Japanese Occupation Period, a Japanese man found Sigau very much alike to his hometown Matsuyama, so he renamed this area Matsuyama (Songshan) and changed the original Sigau Station into Songshan Station. Now, Wufenpu has developed into a tailoring factory and this area is crowded with many people. In the past, the soil in Wufenpu used to be very barren, and there were some mental hospital, so the living condition there was very poor. As time passed on, a group of people from Fangyuan came and started to sell garments. Then it gradually became a tailoring factory. Today, Wufenpu has become much more diversified and is a landmark in this city.
