Description of Our Community: The Betawi people are the original inhabitants of Jakarta. They are often called "people of Jakarta," "people of Batavia," or "Betawi." They are descendents of the people who came to Batavia, (the historical name for Jakarta) in the 15th century. Today, the original Betawi community can be found in areas surrounding Jakarta, such as Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, East Jakarta, Condet and Kampung Sawah in Bekasi (West Java Province). The people of Betawi, natives of Jakarta city, are passionate about preserving their culture, which represents a treasure trove of color, tradition, song, dance, costumes, cuisine and language. One of their traditional dancing is ondel-ondel. Ondel-ondel is the dancing giant puppet show.

Project Description: Ondel Ondel Betawi is a large puppet that made of woven bamboo. There are 3 important parts of Ondel Ondel; they are clothes, face, and hair. Ondel Ondel Betawi is dressed in colorful garments. Sometimes, the puppet is dressed in traditional Betawi clothing. The face of Ondel Ondel Betawi is made of wooden mask in which the mask for female puppet is painted white while the mask for male puppet is painted red. The hair of Ondel Ondel Betawi is made of dried palm tree leaves. The dried leaves are shredded to get the longest shape. Originally, Ondel Ondel Betawi was used to protect a village from calamities that could possibly harm the peace of a village and to wander off evil spirits. Ondel Ondel Betawi is considered a spiritual representation of village ancestors. In the past, village ancestors are believed to have powers to protect a village from various harmful factors. If village ancestors are around, villagers believed that calamities could be avoided and evil spirits can warn off. As a result, the villagers could live happily and peacefully. Due to modernization and cultural development, the function of Ondel Ondel Betawi has now changed. The Betawi people try to preserve Ondel-ondel, the giant dancing puppet.
