Description of Our Community: The early residents of Xuejia District were the Pingpu Siraya tribe (Xuejia branch of the Soulang Community). Later, the Han Chinese migrated to Taiwan and settled along the river before moving further inland and developing the area into the Thirteen Villages of Xuejia, hence making Xuejia a Han Chinese settlement. The residents primarily worship Emperor Pao-sheng of Ciji Temple (Level Three Ancient Monument). Religious activities such as the Xuejia Fragrance (a pilgrimage procession) and the Upper White Reef (yezu ceremony) were further developed and became major religious and cultural activities in Tainan City. Moreover, the temple also specially constructed a Koji Pottery Museum to house and preserve works of Koji pottery by Yeh Wang.

Project Description: Although the number of formations or dance companies that participate in Twelve Grannies Parade is increasing, but compared with other parades, the number of formations for Twelve Grannies Parade is still quite few, and most of them are in Tainan City. The Twelve Grannies Parade in Zhaigang Neighborhood where our school is located is one of them, and our school founded the Children’s Twelve Grannies Parade in 2011. It learns its formation from traditional Twelve Grannies Parade in the community, acquires the religious meaning of the twelve grannies protecting children and integrates new steps to make the formation more innovative and performable. In 2013, in addition to designing school-based parade curricula and conducting creation courses such as history, arts and dressing based on the twelve grannies, our school conducted a research project on the twelve grannies for Cyberfair, which explored the origin of Twelve Grannies Parade and comprehended its meaning and belief of the times. Moreover, the research project thoroughly introduced its dance rituals and meanings of its props and interviewed respected elders of the community, instructors and creators of picture books to authentically record the inheritance process of the formation.
