Description of Our Community: Fanpo Village, our community in Fuxing Township, Changhua County, was developed along Zhanglu Rd. where is originally belonged to Babuza, Mazhilin Village. Women from Pingpu Tribe later set up their residence here; therefore called “Fanpo”. There are populated places including Banludian, Ding Zhuang, Xia Zhuang, and Fanpo Zhuang in the village. Moreover, public facilities mainly include Ryh-Shin Elementary School, temples of Lung-Hsing Kung, Sheng-Te Kung and Xuan-Zhen Kung. The local inhabitants’ livelihood is mainly based on agriculture and the main artery of communication is Zhanglu Rd., which is also near Lugang (Fucheng, Lugang, and Manka together made up Taiwan's three big port cities of the Qing dynasty). Lugang was developed early, and shops were all around on Chung-Shan Rd., especially various shops of ritual implements and holy palanquins. Later on, due to the road widening on Zhanglu Rd. where is also the only path between Changhua City and Lukang, the original shops of holy table and holy palanquin moved to the sides of Zhanglu Rd. little by little. Especially eight to nine shops of holy table and holy palanquin were set near our community; moreover, those who manufactured holy palanquins are later generations of Chen. Holy palanquins; therefore, become one of the most significant commercial art and cultural industries and base in the of Fanpo community.

Project Description: When it comes to temple affairs, holy palanquin plays an important role. It is like a personal limousine of God, and believers are drivers. Believers carry palanquin for a parade and along the parade, believers are standing at the both sides of a road showing their sincerity and big welcome by setting off firecrackers, crawling under the palanquin and also worship for good health and family peace. Palanquins differ from types and sizes as different brands, prices, models and equipment of vehicles can always attract our curiosity. In addition, more attraction for our attention and surprise is the exquisite carved work of holy palanquins. For our curiosity, teachers and students formed a team to learn the story of holy palanquin. Luckily, there are eleven holy palanquin shops on Zhanglu Rd. where is near our school and nine of them are owned by the brothers of Chen. Therefore, we could explore, and appreciate the beauty of holy palanquins realizing how important traditional art and culture are as well as passing down the local property to our following generations.
