Description of Our Community: According to The Report on International Religious Freedom by United States Department of State, Buddhism and Taoism are the two major religions in Taiwan base on population. The population of Taiwan is 23,000,000. There are 5,480,000 Buddhist, 4,540,000 Taoists. This report takes Taiwanese folk religions as Taoism, therefore, the population of Buddhism and Tao overlap to a certain extent. There are over two thousand temples in Taiwan, and there are over two hundred gods that most people worship, such as Guanyin, Matzu, Gautama Buddha, Guan Yu…etc. according to official statistics from the government. In fact, about 86% Taiwanese citizens are religious, and more than 50% citizens participate in various kinds of ritual or festivals. The county where we are at is Yunlin. We will visit remarkable temples, stores and organizations in south central Taiwan (Nantou, Changhua, Yunlin, Tainan) for our research. Because our project is about Taiwanese folk religions, the local community covers many counties.

Project Description: Our research is mainly focus on Tao folk religion and ritual in south central Taiwan. Our project clarifies the difference between Buddhism and Taoism, introduces the rituals, and show the fun and feelings in these activities.
