Description of Our Community: Taipei Wunchang Temple was built in 1960. Legend has it that the statue of Lord Wunchang (the God of Literature) was brought over to Taiwan by a merchant from China. Having failed in business, the merchant returned to China, leaving the god statue in the bush somewhere in Shuanglien district. The god stature was later found by a woman, who then gathered the local residents to build a temple nearby to worship it. Most students who went to the temple had their wish granted, and that resulted in the popularity of the temple. During the period of the MRT construction, the temple whose original site was located on MRT Tamshui line, was then approved by the city hall to move and reconstruct at Min-Shiang Park in Ji-Ying Village, Zhongshan District, Taipei City. With the devotion of the management committee in fund raising and the help of many enthusiastic people in problem solving, the temple was rebuilt in March, 1992, and was completed in the same year in December.

Project Description: Lord Wunchang is the God of Literature. Many students flock to worship Him before exams. Taipei Wunchang Temple is the only temple in Taiwan that enshrines Lord Wunchang as the main temple god. The temple holds twice a year in spring and autumn an enlightenment ceremony, and additional ones are also held before important admission exams to pray good luck for students. During these periods of time, the tourism is also thriving thanks to both the students flocking to the temple and its location right next to the convenient MRT Shuanglien station. Many local and foreign tourists have been attracted to here. Students in Jan Cheng Junior High School also go to the temple to pray for good luck before the Basic Competency Test. Our goal is to illustrate the popularity of Wunchang Temple through on-the-spot investigations and interviews.
