Description of Our Community: Our community: Great Nanao, the ancient name of Nanao, is a place composed of chains of lofty mountains, and a place that tends to be forgotten on maps. It is really hard to imagine that how the aborigines first reached such an outlying place in mountains of Eastern Taiwan. It is located 25 kilometers south of the last pass of Kamalan Hall in Suao, and is located 25 kilometers north of Sinchen, the northernmost village of Hualien. It is a place of mystery and no Han Chinese would like to reside here. The exploratory history of Nanao was started by James Horn’s first exploitation of wood and building of castles. Ta-chuen Luo was the second person to exploit Nanao and built the Peilu Temple here. An English explorer, James Horn, led his homeless fellows of Kamalan to Nanao, and started to exploit this Arcadia secluded from the world. Horn built his own castles and kingdom here, where the story of Nanao began…

Project Description: Project Overview: This project focuses on the developmental history, geographical environment, cultures, landscapes, and ecology of Naoao region in Yilan, and describes the exploratory history of Nanao. We investigated the development history and natural ecology of the area to preserve the precious culture and ecological records of Nanao, and present the most authentic and first-hand information about Nanao to people around the world. Through rational and sentimental viewpoints, it also provides references to the controversy on the construction of Suhua Highway.
