Description of Our Community: The Wugu Wetland Conservation Area is located in Sanchung and is very different from other wetland areas in Taiwan. As it is in the north of the island, it is the first stop-off point for migrating birds arriving in Tainwan from the north and the last stop-off for those coming from the south. It is therefore an extremely popular location for a wide range of migrating birds. Many of Taiwan’s environmental organizations work here to help preserve this unique habitat. As a result, the Wugu Wetland Conservation Area is one of the world’s most important sites for the study of migrating birds.

Project Description: Our team are currently studying a beautiful natured environment in Sanchung, The Wugu Wetland Conservation Area. We are keen to show you that Sanchung is not solely an industrial landscape and would like to introduce this uniquely romantic wildlife canter. The conservative area was, until quite recently, in a very poor state. It had been subject to both extensive industrial pollution and natured disasters. However, after four years of hard work by a variety of environmental organizations, the area was transformed into the amazing wildlife Sanchung we see today. Particularly pleasing evidence of this transformation was provided when a member of the public found a spotted dragonfly (Scientific name: Mortonagrion hirosei Asahina) in the area. This insect has been listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as being endangered and its presence in Sanchung was a surprise to everyone. As a consequence of this find, the Wugu Wetland Conservation Area has become known as place of rebirth, a wildlife paradise in the middle of urban Taiwan.
