Description of Our Community: The Muden Village Incident was a complicated event in history, most people thought that it happened just because Taiwan's original resident are savage. Is it true? In 1871, 69 seamen from Miyako Island in the Ryukyu Archipelago or Orkinawa were shipwrecked along Taiwan's coast and 66 survivors floated to Bayao Bay (today's Jioupeng), where 54 of them were subsequently killed by local Aborigines upon stumbling into Mudan Village, the rest 12 people were sent back to Japan. In 1874, Japanese army deployed an expeditionary force to Taiwan on the pretext of protecting Okinawas, setting into motion the series of events which go by the name "Mudan Village Incident". "Mudan Village Incident" explained Japan's ambition on invading Taiwan and reminded Ching Court to strengthen Taiwan's defenses. Therefore, Shen Bao Jhen, the minister of shipping affairs in Fukien Province, was sent to Taiwan to enhance matters pertaining to defense. Awalled town was built nearby in 1875, and it was named Hengchun. Now, we try to investigate the beginning and subsequent development of Mudan Village Incident by visiting the historical landmarks which the seamen from Miyako Island, Taiwan's original resident, the Japanese military forces, and Ching government left behind. Finally, we want to find the actual state of this affair; and to prove the aborigines were guiltless.
