Description of Our Community: Jhunan Township, Miaoli, used to be a harbor where is located in the northern part of Taiwan. It is also named “Middle Harbor” because of its location between Damshui and Lugang. The reason why Jhunan Township is the main manufactory for making underworld finance is related to its surrounding. According to the “Art of Underworld Finance” which was published by Miaoli County, the “Middle Harbor” is not only a historical ancient business harbor but also the closest harbor to China for the northwestern coast of Taiwan. Since the Mainlander immigrated to Taiwan, they have brought different custom and lifestyle especially about the religion. In order to many followers get together in ancestral temples, the underworld finance industry began to prosper. Moreover, during the most prosperous period, there were more than 300 underworld finance factories set up in Middle Harbor. At that time, local people gave the name of “Golden Middle Harbor” or “Underworld Bank” to praise Jhunan Township. Due to the consideration of environmental protection and wage factors, the industry of underworld finance has been gradually moved to Mainland China and Southeastern Asia. Therefore, the scene of “Golden Middle Harbor” has not existed any longer.
Project Description: In the Taiwanese folk custom, Mr. Yi-Ming Chang is very famous of his collecting and researching underworld finance. He is the first person who started to research underworld finance as well as mastered in doing such career. The purpose of this project is aim to introduce the life and career of Mr. Yi-Ming Chang, also discuss and share his experiences of devoting underworld finance. Mr. Chang enjoys studying special things around him and he always turns this kind of hobby into professional. The most well-known hobbies is collecting something related to underworld finance. Mr. Change spent almost half of his life span, energy and wealth to collect those which people might consider as waste, for example, the slab mold. He is also a talent person in the arts of seal cutting,engraving and lanterns-making? Having Mr. Chang’s efforts to inherit the traditional of arts,we all learn that as long as having a strong-willed mind and not afraid of difficult challenges, the spirit of traditional art will never end.
