Description of Our Community: Kaohsiung is the most famous seaport in southern Taiwan. People there still keep the plain, kind, and substantive traditional spirits. In 1990s, the Taiwanese who were under controlled by Martial Law began to demonstrate against the government. “The Formosa Magazine Event” which shocked the world occurred in 1979. Though Ms. Chen Chu was born in Yilan, she chose to fight against the government with people in Kaohsiung. At last, she was arrested and sentenced to death. The struggles of Ms. Chen were most connected to Kaohsiung, including Social Affairs Bureau of Kaohsiung City Director. Chen Chu said that “Kaohsiung is her second mother hometown”.

Project Description: Chen Chu is a local politician. She grew up in a agricultural family. When she was 19, the plain country girl began to put effort into Taiwan democracy. She spoke loudly for political freedom and the human right. And because of that, she was sent into prison at “the Formosa magazine event”. But she never changed her attitude, still using her passion on her career and tried to let people had free and happy living environment. We can learn something from the lady, for her passion, courage and love. Now that’s what we are going to show you!
