Description of Our Community: “Jingmei” is an ancient market near our school. Due to environmental change, the market is getting less popular than before. However, the establishment of Taipei Public Library, Taipei Cultural Center & Taipei Hydraulic Engineering Office injects the vital energy to the local culture development and recreational activities. By this field-work interviewing, studying and planning, we would like to introduce to everyone the beauty of Jingmei and the romance of Jingmei through the Internet.
The meaning of“Jingmei” in Chinese is charming, fascinating and attractive scenery. Similar to other Taiwan markets, Jingmei Market, surrounding with Jiing Temple that is protected as a third-class place of historical site, is developed along Jingmei Street towards Jingmei Stream. Listening to the history of Jiing Temple, told by a temple volunteer, makes you feel like growing up together with Jingmei Market’s up-and-downs.
“Jingmei”, located in the most southern part of Taipei, is a joint point of Xindian Stream and Jingmei Stream. The geographic position has made it a trade place for traders from Muzha?Xindian?Jhonghe?Gongguan to do trading here. Through the interviews, we found one Chinese herbal medicine store running over 100 years in the Jingmei Market. It proves the history of this ancient market.
Following with the society change and revolution, the Market has extended its business hours to become the night market that meets people’s needs and provides entertainment to the neighborhood, such as workers of Xindian Bao Chiou Industrial Estate, Far-East Industrial Estate as well as the students from Chengchi University?Shixin University?China University of Technology, and Normal University’s Jingmei Branch etc. During the prosperous era, there had day market, night market, department store, supermarkets and four movie theaters simultaneously.
Currently, only local residents trade in the morning market here. Night market does not have as many people shopping around as before; the department store was shut down and supermarkets’ performance becomes poor. Only one movie theater is left for the off-run movies. Nevertheless, Taipei Public Library branch and Taipei Cultural Center have been established here and the repairing construction of Xianji Rock Hiking Trail has been completed. Furthermore, the bikeway along Jingmei Stream has been connected to Yuanshan. Let us imagine what could be expected and what would be inspired when the ancient market meets the modern culture and fashionable recreational activities at this critical moment in Jingmei!
