Description of Our Community: Our school, Bei-huei elementary school, is the only school with the tropic of cancer passing through in the world. So we called ourselves “the Sunshine School.” Our principal, Madam Cheng Shu-Juan, took on the curator of the Tropic of Cancer Solar Exploration Center in October, 2006. Since then, many activities and seminars have been formulated and held here. For example, Reunion at 23.5 Degrees on Moon Festival, Meeting at 23.5 Degrees in December, 2006, a stool concert which provided community people with unforgettable and superior holiday activities, training of volunteers and little couriers, and parent-child science camp…etc. All of these make science closer to the people and students’ lives. With the opportunity of attending the web carnival, we have better understanding of the Tropic of Cancer Solar Exploration Center. Our research methods and steps are as followed: I. Research methods 1. Field Survey: We proceeded to the Exploration Center to grasp the facilities and functions inside and outside. 2. Speech & seminar: We invited the Schemer Yang Chin-liang to our school to make a speech on “ the amazing Tropic of Cancer.” 3. Questionnaire: Conducted to the students of Bei-huei elementary school and the community people. 4. Interview: Interviews with the Magistrate, Curator of the Tropic of Cancer Solar Exploration Center, volunteers, the staff, and the elders…etc. 5. Activities: Competition of designing the new generation Tropic of Cancer landmark, competition of naming the Tropic of Cancer entrance signal, picture book design, and the little couriers…etc. 6. Web pages: Put all research materials and works into webs. II. Research steps 1. Surfing for information 2. Looking for qualified teachers who are specialized in the community’s nature botany, history and culture 3. Visiting the Solar Exploration Center 4. Speech & seminar 5. Project Description: “Tropic of Cancer solar exploration center” as implied by its name, is the location through which the Tropic of Cancer, 23.5 degrees of Northern Latitude, passes. In terms of geography, the sun appears directly overhead at this place every year of the time. However, historical paths also have been carried on it. There are nine Tropic of Cancer monuments in the world. The one, first built in 1908, located in Shueishang township, Chiayi county, ROC, is the oldest. Through times of renovations, the 6th generation tower was finished in 1995. It has the contour of the UFO and officially named as “the Tropic of Cancer Sunshine Plaza.” Originated over one hundred years ago from a geographical signal to a tiny park of the 5th generation, the plaza was once a trash collection area. Now it displays a brand new appearance and becomes the center of science education in Chiayi County with the government’s help. Important activities on special festivals have been held here constantly. It is also a good place for the community residents to rest and have fun. This landmark of the Tropic of Cancer now not only stands for geographical meaning but also provides a good spot for science education and sightseeing. People’s compassion and recognition to the community are therefore consolidated.
