Description of Our Community: Jian Township is a plain located between the valleys of Central Mountain Chain and Coastal Mountain Chain. It is an alluvial plain formed from divergence of Mu-Gua River and Hualien River; the geology is rich and the agriculture is well developed. The cultivated area is approximately 3,200 hectares and the agricultural products are mainly based on paddy rice, vegetables and flowers; where leeks and pea shoots in vegetables are the largest productions. Under the Impact of international and liberated economical trades, the traditional agriculture cannot compete any longer; therefore the industrial structure has to transform. In order to protect the interests and benefits of local farmers, the Farmers’ Association in Jian Township wishes the farmers to cooperate with the policy and carry out the following measures to increase profit and make the economy in farming village alive.

Project Description: In this topical research, we discovered that the future of agriculture is an unstable issue; because it has to cooperate with the change of the whole macro environment for judgment of volatility of the whole agricultural area. In addition, singular production will reduce its own income; thus diversified operation must be made together with consideration on the change in the market and commercial area. Therefore, the farmers in Jian Township at present must follow the trend and produce crops with higher price; or develop towards leisure agriculture. However, since the cost of investing in leisure agriculture is higher, adequate training and consultation is thus given depending on personal willingness for increase of farmer’s profit. More importantly, there is increase of basic benefit to farmers, otherwise the agricultural population that is gradually decreasing might face more serious problem of outflow. Furthermore, it is better for each Township to apply “less diversity in more quantity” to cooperate the quality of product in each village. By growing various different vegetables and fruits to control the amount of production, there will not be too many products of the same kind appear together and break the balanced mechanism between production and marketing; so farmer’s income can maintain at level above the average.
