Where does the name of Si-lin come from?

The name of the village originally came from the shape of Chi-Ya- Kan. Si lin village and surrounding area used to be a hunting area which owned by the local leader Ping under the Japanese regime between 1895-1945. One day he was on his way to go hunting, he found out the river and surrounded area looked like a tree hole (La Earn Ger Horn Ney in Taroko language). Therefore he named this area as La-earn Ger-horny in Taroko language or tree hole in English. After the Second World War(In 1946), the nationalist government took the control from Japanese government and undertook the regional adjustment proposal to modify the regional structure. As a result, Tree hole was re-named to Si-Lin until present.

Project Description: “Overcome the challenge, face the new century, “The education wizard in Chi-Ya-Kan. Grand-pa Chang is one of the most respectable elite in Si Lin village; “he is the most popular grandpa in Si-Lin village” quoted by children from Si-Lin. Teacher Tsung-Sheng, Chang has got infantile paralysis when he was a child. As a result,he has got some disabilities on his legs. Although he is physically disable, He has shown his greastest determination to do everything not only from his studies to become a teacher to teach students but also how he contribute his efforts to the community.

Afer having been a teacher at Si-Lin Primary for 40 years, Teacher Tsung-Sheng Chang is retired from Si-Lin Primary school. Although Teacher Chang is retired he still spends some time doing some voluntary jobs to help the community of Silin.

This project is dedicated to look up the story of one of local elite in Si-Lin village. It will show how he overcome his disabilities(Infantal Paralysis) to achieve his goals and educate local pupils. Local education plays an important role in the entire education system.
