Description of Our Community: Memories fade but would not be forgotten; memories could be concealed but would not disappear. Tianpu Train Station is located at the join of Hualien City and Ji-an Township, is at the bank of Chijiaochuan River, and is next to Toulan Bridge.
Here used to be where old Hualien people repose their emotions and store their memories. The timbers of Morisaka were gathered here for delivery; the sugar canes of Hsincheng, Beipu, were packed here for shipping to Guangfu; train passengers used to get off here only for tasting the hometown flavors at the small noodle shop under the big pine tree. Somehow, without realizing it, the name of Tianpu Train Station has disappeared in the railway timetable.
With cars and people passing by, Tianpu waits at the corner of the street alone. The lonesomeness and the bustling city streets create a strong contrast. Under the pine tree, old people ponder and recall the old stories. It is expected that with Project of Transformation from Old Railway to a Public Arcade”, Tianpu Train Station will be able to display its beauty once more, and that by following the trail of the old railway, young people will be able to imagine and memorize the charm and the sweetness of the land. Like this, the melody of the Memory of Tianpu Train Station will be able to sound in people’s heart and mind.
Project Description: Tianpu Train Station is a small station located in Hualien County that used to witness the coming and going of passengers on the trains that thundered along. Together with the time past, Tianpu Train Station is no longer existent. Who would remember that the relics of the once famous Amei Cultural Village were first discovered here? And who would remember the tall buildings here used to serve as a timber pond in which timbers were stored in the past? The rise and the fall of Tianpu are the epitome of Hualien County’s railway history, as well as the trail of the local development.
Presently, Tianpu Train Station has undergone the “Project of Transformation from Old Railway to a Public Arcade” proposed by Hualien County Government. Tianpu Train Station will be showing a different flavor after the professional designs and the participations of the local residences. It will become another tourist spot of Hualien County, will provide a leisure space for the public, and will once again tell the beautiful story of the past Tianpu.
Apart from delving into the humanism, the industries and the diverse cultures of Tianpu, the objectives of the present column also include the interviews with the local residences regarding the development and the planning of the unused land of Tianpu. With the wish that through this column, the younger generation will once again know the beautiful local cultures of Tianpu, will start to recall and imagine the past Tianpu, and will hence become passionate and caring towards this piece of land. Likewise, tourism is not only about materialistic consumptions. It is only through cultural inspirations and callings that the visitors would enjoy so much and do not wish to leave. Thus, why not think of it as a path that leads to a better tomorrow of Tianpu.
