Description of Our Community: Lujhou is located in the northwest area of Taipei Basin and the west bank in the lower reach of Tam-chui River, which separates it from She-zi Island of Shi-lin District in Taipei in the northeast. It borders Wu-gu Village in the east and SanChung City in the southeast. The hypsography is low and flat decreasingly from southeast to northwest with a little incline to the northwest. Lujhou is the alluvion by Da-hang Brook and Xin-dian Brook, with fertile land, which is suitable for planting.
In ancient times, Lujhou was the low and flat alluvion on Tam-chui River bank with luxuriant aquatic plants. Reeds grew thickly on two sides of the riverbank. When reed catkins were blooming, a vast expanse of whiteness was so beautiful with catkins flying in the air. Moon climbed to the tree tips at night and reed catkins were reflected by yellowy moonlight and like the dancing sprays in the gentle breeze with a serene touch of passion to the ancient, which therefore made many poets wandering here. It was honorably named “Moon reflected in Lujhou” and regarded as one of the top eight scenes of Tam-chui.
Project Description: She was seventeen years old when she left behind a life of affluence and privilege to take up arms in help defending China against the Japanese invaders. Afterwards, she followed her husband to his homeland of Taiwan, where she worked hard to overcome the barrier of a new dialect and the stress of gaining acceptance from a large household. When her husband was falsely implicated in the February 28th Massacre, she traveled to China to secure his release, even though she was pregnant at the time. Sadly, soon after she found herself victim of a frame-up and was taken to jail. During the imprisonment, she endured the heartbreak of her husband’s passing, as the fifteen-year sentence crept by in emptiness. After leaving prison, she suffered all the agonies and prejudices of life. Yet she founded the World Translation Company. By then, she was already fifty years old. Her success in establishing an enterprise won her the respect of the entire family, and some asked her to lead the groundwork for donating the old family mansion to the community. Over the years, she convinced the relatives one by one, finally fulfilling the mission of preserving that ancestors’ cultural heirloom for posterity. What is more important, she even procured by herself signatures from four thousand people to initiate a bill on protection of cultural treasures. Her efforts ensured that the culture treasures of Taiwan are better safeguarded. Her name is Yen, Hsin-Feng, and she is one amazing woman who has stood firmly against the ravaging torrents of time. Now, through our programs, we shall bring her amazing history back to life.
