Description of Our Community: Motivation

The Amis harvest festival is well known by lots of people. During the 7-day festival, Taitung would be swarming with tourists who come to make merry through night and day with the Amis. For tourists, the harvest festival is only made for fun. For aboriginals, the harvest festival is to thank the spirits for their care and protection. Tourists gain information from those sightseeing pamphlets which they threw away once they read them. The harvest festival is almost what they know about Taiwan aboriginals’ culture. However, there is still plenty of aboriginals cultural treasure undiscovered. That’s why our team choose Taiwan aboriginals as our website subject. We hope we can provide another access for people to know and learn to appreciate the beauty of this old tribe who came to this island long before our ancestors.

Project Description: Content

The website covers 12 aboriginals tribes: Atayal, Taroko, Kuvalan, Amis, Thao, Puyuma, Yami, Paiwan, Rukai, Tsou, Bunun, and Saisiat. The content of this website is divided into five parts: geographical distribution & population, clothing & accessories, arts & handicrafts, religious ceremonies and social status. Users can efficiently get an extensive coverage about what Taiwan aboriginals are. They can even get to know some unique aboriginals’ customs like the removal of body hair, face tattoo and extracting teeth for decoration.

Reflections The greatest pleasure while doing this project comes from turning what we construct in our mind into what you can see. Though the process sometimes can be tiring and frustrating, the sense of achievement compensates all. As the citizen living in this beautiful island Formosa, we are honored to introduce the beauty of Taiwan aboriginals’ culture to you and wish you would like it.
