Description of Our Community: Pingtung is the most southern county of Taiwan which has wide and wealthy land and a long coast. The fever of aquiculture with salty and fresh water have risen since 1974, its source of fresh water comes from underground. Because of over taking ground water, there has been a serious land subsidence near Jai Dong. Jai Dong is located at the southern part of the Pingtung Plain, southeast to it is the wide Taiwan Strait. On the coast line where the Lin Bian River flows out to sea is Wun Fong village. It is a typical village that has been troubled by land subsidence. Wun Fong village used to be an aquafarm, called Wun Zih. Because of its special geography environment and its long coastline, most people here decided to be fishers. This village is also one of the few professional aquiculture areas in Taiwan. And because of its land subsidence, it now attracts a lot of tourists and students.

Project Description: Wun Fong village, seated at Jia Dong of Pingtung County, is a typical village of land subsidence. Residents here live by breeding fish. Aquiculture brings the villagers wealth, but it also brings disaster. Long years of over abstracting ground water caused severe land subsidence and ground water to be salinized. In this research, we will study the relationship between the villagers and the ground water; the effects that land subsidence do to residents’ life, and also the people’s attitude toward life.
