Description of Our Community: The Number One Ancient Cedar of Lera was discovered by Professor Hui-Yen Chou of Culture University, Taipei, in 1973. Several dozens trees of more than one thousand years were found later, and the Great Trees of Lera became a national and international tourists attraction.

The Phytoncidere emitted from the great trees is good for adjusting human sensing systems, pacifying the moods and concentrating attentions. The Ancient Forest Reserve is a balanced eco-system, complete with many precious plants and animals.

To promote the natural eco-systems and the concept of conservation, no permit is required when you enter the Reserve in the protected mountains. An exhibition hall was established in the Reserve. You’d meet some native Tayals who’re eager to give you a eco-tour. You could also enjoy hot coffees amidst the ancient trees.

Project Description: Mr. Tung-He Chen grew up in Yi-Lan, in north-eastern Taiwan. After he graduated from the elementary school, he took care of chores like planting vegetables, peanuts and raising pigs, as all the country boys did at that time. He also helped with his father’s business, a grocery store.

He was poor, but he learned the importance of hardworking. He opened a store near Yi-Lan, selling imported items from Southeast Asia and clothes after he finished two-years compulsory military service.
