Description of Our Community: Yuanchang village is located on the east side of Gaotai Plateau in Luye Township, Taitung County. Neighboring Hsinwulue River and Coast Mountains, Yuanchang village is a community belonging to administrative district of Yuanan Village of Luye Township. Ethnically, most villagers descendants of Hengchun branch of Ami Tribe, which has populated the eastern Taiwan from Hualien, Taitung, to hengchun. Because the natural environment and resources vary in different locales, Ami Tribe’s ancestors must adapt themselves by learning to utilize natural resources to meet physical and spiritual demands. That was the impetus that empowered Ami Tribe with the knowledge of folk plants.

Project Description: Aborigines live in a way that follows the nature, the provider of their daily supplies. They must use their intelligence to satisfy the basic needs by making the best use of what nature provides. For the past decades, while aborigines were adapting themselves into modern culture, the spring of living wisdoms, passing down from the ancestors, has been gradually drying away into oblivion as the elders of the tribes dwindle in number. It is our greatest hope that by our efforts spent on this project, we will rediscover the value of the natural plants used by ancestors in their daily lives, learn to respect the nature, and value the preciousness of natural resources. The knowledge will provide us a foundation for future researches into finding new uses for those plants. We will be able to preserve and glorify the wisdom and experience passing down generations from ancestors by instilling new lives into them with modern research.
