Description of Our Community: Lujhou City is situated on the west bank of the downstream of Tamshui River, overlooking Shihlin District of Taipei on the northeast side, adjacent to Wugu Township, and neighboring Sanchung City to form a rhombus shape. The city ranges 8,321 km2, with area little larger than Yunghe City among all 29 cities and townships in Taipei County. Lujhou was once alluvial sandbank with low terrain and fertile soil. It is suitable for farming and living, but due to occurrence of flood, the speed of development was quite slow. In 1982, in coordination with “Sanchung/Yunghe Urban Development Plan” and Initial Stage Plan for Flood Control, as well as the completion of Erjhung Flood Channel, the flood problem has been solved. Also due to the traffic system developed between Taipei and Lujhou, the migrated populated has increased significantly. In 1997, “Lujhou Township” was advanced to “Lujhou City”.

Project Description: 1940-60’s was the era of major political transition in Taiwan, also the peak prosperous years of the clogs industry in Lujhou. At that time, over 70 clogs shops were opened along Chenggong Rd. and Jhunshan 2nd Rd, which were known as the “Clogs Street”. It was a time when “clogs” represents “Lujhou”, and “Lujhou” means “clogs”. People of Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli areas called Lujhou a “clogs nest”. However, if you ask Lujhou residents about the “Clogs Street”, most of them would be blank about it. Even us were surprised to hear the history. Therefore, we would like to explore the clogs industry of Lujhou. In addition to learning about the history of clogs, we aim to represent the local residents the once lost memory about Lujhou, and learn about the obstacles faced by traditional industries in major transitions.
