Description of Our Community: Originally, the Kavalans lived in I-Lan. In the last two centuries, some Kavalans moved to Hwa-Lien and Tai-Tung and kept their identities a secret for historical reasons. Many thought-provoking historical incidents took place in recent day Chia-Li Village. A monument was erected in the Creek Bank Park of Chia-Li Village for the Kavalan Tribe in an attempt to renew the understanding of "People and Tribal Groups."

Project Description: 1.We chosen topic is "An Affair of the Kavalan - Disappearance of the Chia-Li-Wan Order". The Kavalans is one of the Ping-Pu Tribes. How did these tribes get the name “Ping-Pu”? The term "Ping-Pu Tribes" is used to describe the aborigines living on the various plains in Taiwan.

It was said the Kavalans came to the Lan-Yang Plain in I-Lan from an island off the east coast. The term "Kavalan" denotes people who live on a plain. Our village, Chia-Li Village was once Chia-Li-Wan Order, the home to thousands of Kavalans who moved here from I-Lan. Although very few people in Chia-Li talk about the past, historians and scholars continue to discover evidences linking this place to its past. With the assistance from tribal members in the New Order area and government officials, Kavalan was officially decreed as the elevenths native group. When tribal elders began to tell us stories from the past, we thought Kavalan was an appropriate topic for further investigation. Through our research, we not only want to bring back the forgotten images and bits of history, we also want to re-discover our ancestor’s wisdom and experience and gain a renewed understanding and respect for the diversity in our society.
