Description of Our Community: Balon is situated in the Central Mountains of Taiwan, about 50 kilometers to the South of Taipei. Find the Fu-Hsin Country of Tao-Yuan County, and follow the Northern Cross-Island Highway to its middle section, and you’re in Balon, which means cedars in native Tayal language.

The Upper Balon of Balon Area is about 1,220 meters above sea level. The habitants are mostly native people of Tayal Tribe, and they make a living from peaches orchards and tourism.

Lera, one of the mountains of Upper Balon, meaning “to see far away, the most beautiful mountain” in Tayal language, is so-called for a reason. One sees as far as the seashores of Yi-Lan County in Northeastern Taiwan, Taipei County and Hsin-Chu County of Western Taiwan, and finds the cone-shaped granite of Da-Ba-Jian Mountain on the other side. The superb geological location made Mountain Lera a hot spot when Japanese invaders tried to take local Tayal people. The Balon Fu-Shan Trail, which leads from Balon to Fu-Shan Country of Ulai, Taipei County, is rated as The Ten Best Mountain Hiking Trails in Taiwan by Tourism Bureau.

Project Description: Mountain Lera of Balon, where the creeks flow through deep mountains, is home to the Primary Red Cedar Forest in Southeast Asia, and many visitors come for the magnificent spectacle. It’s also famous for the First Choice of Forest Trails in Taiwan. The peaches yielded here are so sweet and juicy that Lera is called “Homeland of Pears”.

In our project, with field trips and insights from tribe masters and inn-keepers, we try to figure out what’s in the past, the present and the future of Mountain Lera of Balon. We want to share the nature beauty and diverse ecology of Mountain Lera with as many as possible, and it’s as much as we can do to help get people to respect the Motherland.
