Description of Our Community: In Taiwan, you can see hakkas almost all around this island! In north part of this island, Hakkas distribute in Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli; in south area, they distribute in Kaohsiung and Pingtung who speak in Sixian accent (or Four Counties accent) also called “Liutui (six teams)” hakkas. Those “Liutui” hakkas mainly live in Tienliao of Pingtung city, Wanluan, Chutien, Changchih, Linlo, Chiuju Tsunliao, Neipu, Hsinpi, Chiatung, Kaosu, Likang Wulo in Pingtung county, and distribute in Meinung, Liukuei, Shanlin, part of Chiahsien, chishan Shouchinliao in Kaohsiung county. They are similar to middle and north Taiwan hakkas in integrity, diligence, modesty, loyalty but language. Most of them make living by farming and follow the old proverbs, ”Yi Teng Jen Chung Chen Hsiao Tzu, Liang Chien Shih Tu Shu Keng Tien” Hakka ancestors think the best person is to be loyal or filial and the best two things are study and farming. Maybe it is due to the old order is study, farming, working, then business; all old hakkas hope their posterities could be the best persons. They tell their children “Ching Keng Yu Tu”, working on the farm on sunny days and studying at home on raining days to use their time efficiently. The “six teams” hakkas still keep this tradition till now.

Project Description: The formal name of Liutui Culture Researching Academy is (corporation aggregate) Pingtung County Liutui Cultural Research Academy. It published Research of Hakka Development and Changes In Society and Culture In Liutui Area (named shortly as Hakka Local Annal in Liutui) book series. Totally fourteen chapters in fifteen books, with near two hundred people attending, the book series cost nearly five years and more than ten million dollars. Cross Kaoshiung and Pingtung county and in the three hundred years from developing era to 1998, it is related to history, language, politic, religion, remains, antique and so on. It can be regard as the encyclopedia of Liutui and a great work never seen in Liutui before. It is a pity that the hardly united cultural talents being separated after the book series completed. Dr. Hsu Cheng-Kuang therefore suggested establishing a team working for passing Liutui culture.
