Summary: The Global Virtual Classroom (GVC) is a collection of free, online educational activities and resources.  It aims to complement the efforts of governments and educators around the world to integrate technology into their classrooms and curricula and to link their schools to the Internet in educationally productive ways.

During the Contest, teams from schools from around the world compete in an effort to build websites that best meet contest objectives.  Each team is made up of students from schools in different countries working together.  The websites are judged on the quality of their content and presentation, effective collaboration, and a focus on helping others through knowledge or activities. 

?The contest runs each year from October through April, with winners announced and cash prizes awarded in May.

Full Project Description:

•Introduction period (Until Oct 30) ?Use this time to get acquainted with your partners. Share photos, hobbies, likes, dislikes, family, whatever with help you to know a little more about those you will work with during this time. Also start discussing topics for your collaboration. Team leader turn in team plan in the Teacher's Lounge. ?

October 1 •Official Beginning of the Contest Work Period. Gather ideas, discuss within your own school and share with partner schools. Agree on a topic and begin work!

DECEMBER 15 •Mid Contest - Take a look at ideas and work done to date. Research should be finished or nearly finished. If you have not yet started the creative aspects of work, it's time to begin. If you break for holidays, be sure your partners know! ?

JANUARY 15 •Web Site Design - We use Google sites. Your space is available right away. By mid January, there should be evidence of your work on your site.

MARCH 15 •Check, Fix, Publicize (Until Mar 31) ?Good idea to strive to finish within 2 weeks of contest close. That gives you time to check work, make sure all the links work, and invite others to view, comment, suggest things that need doing... MARCH 31 •Contest Ends Be sure you have checked your site from several different devices using different browsers.

The GVC’s goal is to empower, enable and connect young people around the world using internet technologies. It creates a stimulating environment where students can learn essential “21st century” information technology, globalization, and socialization skills such as: Collaboration, cross-cultural communication, teamwork, internet & information technology skills, creativity, project planning, website design skills, caring for & giving back to others
