Hello. We in Botswana are very pleased to have joined the Global Community. Pupils in our community find geometry to be very abstract. Teachers, textbook writers and other interested parties tend to downplay the important role that geometrical objects in our community can be used to explain mathematical concepts. We would like to invite participants from around the world to join our problem-solving project. Students should be from the ages of 12 – 18.The participants will conduct research in their locality and exchange ideas through e-mail, beginning 28 January 2002. Objectives:

a. Project Title: GEOMETRICAL OBJECTS I OUR COMMUNITY b. Curricular Focus and Aim. I) relate geometrical object found in our community to classroom situations. ii)find relationship between 3D and 2D shapes. c. Activity Structure: Collect and identify different geometrical objects found in their community. iidraw nets of objects iii.Identify 2D shapes from 3D objects. iv.measure the lengths of faces. Iv) Find perimeter v) Calculate area, volume, vi) Draw their plans and elevations d. Means of Communication – electronic mail , . e. Intended Age Group: Provide range of ages -- e.g. 14-18 – rather than “grade” level. f. Dates and Frequency of Exchanges: Deadline for registration;28-01-2002 g. Expected Outcomes: Explain what the end result(s) will be: email or web-based dialogues, print publications, webpages, picture gallery, etc. ?
