1. Description of Our Community
The 'local community' of Patchogue-Medford can be best described as both diverse and artistic. Over the years it has grown to become a cultural haven on the South Shore of Long Island, where music and art thrive. There is a growing Latino community which adds different cultural aspects to the community.
2. Summary of Our Project
This project is all about highlighting some of the cultural aspects, whether it be food, art, or music, that Patchogue-Medford has to offer. It also served as a way to get my ESL students more involved and exposed to the local community.
3. Our Computer and Internet Access
A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:less than 20
B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6
C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure
D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:1
4. Problems We Had To Overcome
One of the obstacles we faced was internet connection. The computers we were using had spotty internet connection and much time was lost trying to connect to work on our website. Another obstacle was language. These students are newcomer and beginner ESL students, therefore language did play an obstacle and added to the length of time it took to complete many of the tasks.
5. Our Project Sound Bite
Participation in International Schools Cyberfair has made the community these students live in both broader and more accessible. It has opened up there eyes to many aspects of Patchogue-Medford that they did not know existed.
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
As an ESL class this project touched on all of the ESL standards 1 and 4:
Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for information and understanding.
Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for social interaction.
The students learned a lot of new vocabulary, as well as how to summarize, and conduct an interview. The students also learned a lot about technology in the classroom.
