Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

We are a public charter school in Austin, Texas with nearly 400 students. We are diverse and a high performing community.

2. Summary of Our Project

We are exploring art in Austin. It is live music capital of the world so we will discuss music. Film is growing with many movies filmed here. Dance is big in Austin with our own ballet company and many dance studios and offerings. Art is exploding with .any galleries and openings and opportunities for artists. All other types of cultural artistic categories are also discussed,

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:4-6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

We do not have laptop carts or access to technology daily, but we do have a computer lab and 4 student computer stations in our classroom. We would like to see technology grow in our school.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We are an AP class, so most of our time is spent preparing for that test in May. There is very little class time for this project, so we must do it all at home. Many of us work, so that is a problem.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Cyberfair has given students the opportunity to integrate learning with technology which is a critical skill for 21st century learners.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Research was an important part of our assignment, so being able to do it for Cyberfair reinforces that and gives an engaging way to do it. We had to collaborate with our small team and then pool our progress with the larger group. There are always some students who contribute more than others.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We used basic search engines as well as online sites for specific groups. There were local publications like the Austin Chronicle that provided some information. A few of us actually visited the place we were covering and did interviews.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Students learned online etiquette for blogs and interviews. We also reviewed internet safety.Administration was impressed and we may show our product at a final assembly at the end of the year.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The people who helped us research were happy to help and glad we were creating something that supports local artists. A few new relationships were formed and we learned about things we never knew about even though we live here.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We did not really have any involvement from helpers or volunteers.
