Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located at the Chungcheng District, close to the Presidential Office Building and Residence.

2. Summary of Our Project

We invited students, parents and teachers to form research team - “Little Tree”. “The old trees are many people’s companions in the childhood and partners in old age”. Thus, the old trees are not only part of ecology, but also the cultural assets.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

1.Difficult to find common research times The 4 members of the team were in different classes, and we had only two hours every week to work together, thus had less time for discussion and practice. In order to overcome this problem, the teachers constructed the “Digital platform of Moodle”, and announced assignments or discussion online, and uploaded the progress and reorganization of data. 2. Modifying research frameworks for several times Since there were many old trees in Taipei City, after discussions with teachers, we modified research framework for several times. With the suggestions of parents and teachers who have been living near the school, we finally decided to focus on the old trees in “Chungcheng District”. 3.It was difficult to collect the residents’ views on the old trees Since the old trees we studied were located in the lanes, we often found the trees near the temples. We randomly interviewed the residents or passerby. However, the old trees did not make significant impression on most of them. The reason was in that the old trees lived longer than the residents. Most of the time, we interviewed the people worked in the temples, and targeted on their observation and impression of the old trees. Thus, it was difficult to collect data.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

(1) We expect that our project will inspire people to cherish the old trees. In the concrete jungle and on the asphalt roads in Taipei City, the old trees are precious. In the process of searching for the preserved trees, we found many stories between trees and humans. The stories are in the neighborhood and perhaps between you and me. (2) Allow more people to recognize the jobs of “tree doctor” and the importance through this project.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In this Cyberfair project, we focused on the old trees in Chungcheng District in the vicinity of our school. We studied the old trees around the school, and interviewed the people relaxing under the old trees in order to understand their feelings toward the old trees. We participated in a series of activities related to the old trees, such as block print, colored glass ball, and speeches, to recognize the existence value of the old trees.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

My school computer classroom have 2 have 72 of computer in all, other administration spend about 100 computers with computer and class, supply with 19 Taiwan of note type computer which a teacher uses, there are 24 students' note type computers, all adopt the optic fibre and host computer room line; There is window2000 one server in the host computer room, Linux one server, Linux 1 server and several servers of other operating systems. The team members mostly use and download the inquiry that ADSL that 2M uploads 512K carries on the materials and transmission of the file at home, and apply for a webpage space in the school, regard

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

(1) Draw the attention of government on conservation of the old trees From data searching or visiting of the old trees, we found that people are only aware of the “age” of the old trees, and hardly care about them. We hope that the government can spend more budgets on promoting old tree culture in homeland education and environmental education, and draw more people’s attention on the old trees. (2) Through our webpage, more people will care about the old trees in their surrounding, and they will know how to protect them.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

(1) Draw the attention of government on conservation of the old trees From data searching or visiting of the old trees, we found that people are only aware of the “age” of the old trees, and hardly care about them. We hope that the government can spend more budgets on promoting old tree culture in homeland education and environmental education, and draw more people’s attention on the old trees. (2) Through our webpage, more people will care about the old trees in their surrounding, and they will know how to protect them.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

(1) Thanks to Mr. Chang who has been the school volunteer for 15 years. After the interview, we learned more about old Red Fruit Fig-tree at the gate of school. (2) Thanks to teachers of natural science in school for providing information related to the old trees near school. (3) Thanks to the boss of restaurant under Hsiang-jui old tree. She is the parent of a student in our school, and after her introduction, we learned the toughness of the old trees. (4) Thanks to Mr. Chi, the guard of Taipei Municipal University of Education, owner of bookstore and boss of laundry who receive our interview. (5) Thanks to the abbot and worshipper of the temples who receiver our interview.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

1. Discoveries (1) According to interview with the residents and others, we realized that the old trees near the temples are particularly reliable to the followers. However, since people worship the old trees, they restrict the growing space. Some old trees are not under proper management. These are the problems of conservation of the old trees which should be recognized and valued by the government and the public. (2) After listening to tree doctors’ speeches, we have primary understanding of their jobs and realize the importance of tree doctors. 2. Lessons (1) The bodhi Tree in Taipei Municipal University of Education, across-street of The Affiliated Experimental Elementary School, should be hacked due to brown root disease. Teachers and students in Taipei Municipal University of Education, and the students in The Affiliated Experimental Elementary School had all celebrated the anniversaries of the bodhi tree in the past. Members of “Little Tree” had sung birthday songs for this old tree with the choir. Thus, we were sad about the death of the old tree. We thus treated “the old trees” as the subject and in memory of the old bodhi tree, thus further paid attention to the surrounding old trees. In the lanes we pass every day, there can be the old trees we never care about. On the streets in Taipei City, have we stopped and recognized the green? By Cyberfair project, upon the old trees in school, we study those in Chungcheng District and intend to make more people to cherish the old trees in Taipei. (2) In this Cyberfair project, at the beginning, we were unfamiliar with data reorganization. However, with the teachers’ instruction, we gradually constructed the research framework and reorganized the information. 3.Surprises “Are there old trees in Taipei City? Not many?” When studying the old trees, we realized that there are many old trees in Chungcheng District. They can be in the lanes nearby and people might not observe them even pass by them every day. Through data collection and on-site visit of the old trees in Chungcheng District, we recognized the importance of these trees which are the “live historic interests”. The moving stories between “the old trees and me” are around us!
