2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.
The most fun part of this research is to chat with senior citizens. Additionally, they are very enthusiastic about each question we ask, and they would like to share knowledge and teach us. While sometimes they do not know the answer to the question we ask, they manage to figure out what the answer is by discussing it with others. Because of their enthusiasm, we do learn a lot from those cute people. They often tell us that we can taste the experience of practicing Yuanji, Tai Chi Chuan, Chikung and Chia-chia by joining those people. Since we couldn’t resist their zeal, we staff join them to practice the exercise in person too, although we just do that a little bit!
3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?
As the saying goes, “Early birds get worms.” We truly believe this. Because we never get up so early, and never go to the school to do the research at 5:30 a.m, all of the things we taste are rather fresh, and they are totally a novelty to us! Not only do we realize that school is such a bustling place in the morning, but we enjoy doing exercise with local residents. That feeling is so great!
The majority of the members in this club are senior citizens, which surprises us very much, for they become healthier and happier by joining this club. We do hope your family members, especially senior citizens, can get to know this morning community club and try to join us to pursue a healthy and enjoyable life.
4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?
Thanks to Mr. Pan, the secretary-general of ChineseYuanji & Kungfa Research Association, Mr. Jan, the board chairman of Chinese Tai Chi Chuan Association, and Mr. Zhong, the director of Wu Shin Ba Bu Chikung Association, for offering many photos and information so that we can design the Web site smoothly. After the secretary-general Pan’s permission, the music on the Web site is allowed to be used.
5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)
When we are interviewing Mr. Jan, he tells us that a recent report shows that not only can exercising Tai Chi Chuan give us good balance, but also prevent us from falling over and getting fractures. Exercise really can make people healthier and save some money for us because we need to see a doctor less often. Now the government is advocating the ideal of all the people exercising together, for example, losing weight 100 pounds and encouraging people to jog, etc. Although this is a very good idea, it overlooks those who need to be cared about—senior citizens in our society. They wake up in the early morning, and they tend to care about their own health as well. However, they are too shy to taste different things, so they don’t know how to join our club and do not dare to take the initiative to participate with us. Even so, we discover that as long as people try to encourage them more and more, they will have more confidence. Take an old lady for example, during our interview, we require her to take a picture with us. She, however, turns us down because she feels that she is not photogenic at all. But we have realized so long as we spend more time communicating with them, they can be much more enthusiastic too!
