Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Nei-Hu is a beautiful place since it surrounds with hill and river. ?One river(Ji-Long), two lakes( Da-Hu and Bi-Hu ), and many mountains?are the most special geographical features. Although it is located in Taipei city, it is not a busy and intense place. Instead, there are many beautiful mountains filled with fresh air, and there are a number of good places you can go visit—our lovely hometown—Nei-Hu, Taipei.

2. Summary of Our Project

It is usual to hear music resounds gently through every corner of campus in the early morning and the moment of sunset with golden sunshine. Those people who love exercise are spreading their vigor, and their concentration really attracts us a lot. The Charming Four Associations are the growing community groups on campus. We hope we can find out why this community groups appeal to plenty of people and get to further understand it. Hopefully, we are able to bring people into this wonderful and healthy world through this research.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

This research mostly focuses on the school, rather than always aiming at students’ homes. In school, students can use the whole computer facility and surf the Internet, such as trying to download something and send files, so that they can get a glut of information online, which is convenient for them. At home, students can surf the Internet, share something with others and do their assignments via ADSL and CABLE.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

“Everybody, let’s exercise together!” Every time we go to the school to do our research, people always greet us warmly. For this reason, we do not feel it is a big problem for us to get up in the very early morning. On the other hand, we do enjoy doing it in that those who greet us well are quite friendly. That’s why our staff every day always wear beautiful smiles to take more challenges on this project. However, the only difficulty we still couldn’t overcome is that those pictures we took are not clear at all, since when we arrive at the school, the sun hadn’t risen. Thus, the photos look dark and unclear, which disappoints us a lot.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

“Early birds can get worms.” “Exercise is good for our bodies.”

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

A big curriculum was put together to achieve this research purpose. By allowing children to utilize their observational skills, interviewing techniques, adopting descriptive words, along with their information-gathering skills, this competition is to train students with skills that they can carry away.

Our research aims at Yuanji, Tai Chi Chuan, Chikung and Ballroom Dance, which people are familiar with. During the research, we interview the senior citizens, experiencing the hometown language and the realm of arts, appreciating the profound Chinese traditional martial art and dance. What’s more, we achieve a healthy life over participating in this project. Also, we learn a lot from those senior citizens’ perseverance and get to know how to arrange time wisely, so that when we are faced with difficulties and challenges, we know how to deal with and complete them effectively with a joyful heart.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

[Hardware] DV:Submit the practice process to the internet Telephone, cell phone: Contact interviewees and confirm schedules Computer:Compose websites and adjust pictures and data The Internet: Search for the information, compose process reports, and view other compositions on the internet Recording Pen: Record interviews Digital Camera:Take pictures and record the process Printer:Print questionnaires and data out [Software] Interview:Ask for answers and become closer to interviewees Computer Software(Word?Namo?PhotoImpact?Flash, etc) :Adjust pictures and compose websites and animations

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

The most fun part of this research is to chat with senior citizens. Additionally, they are very enthusiastic about each question we ask, and they would like to share knowledge and teach us. While sometimes they do not know the answer to the question we ask, they manage to figure out what the answer is by discussing it with others. Because of their enthusiasm, we do learn a lot from those cute people. They often tell us that we can taste the experience of practicing Yuanji, Tai Chi Chuan, Chikung and Chia-chia by joining those people. Since we couldn’t resist their zeal, we staff join them to practice the exercise in person too, although we just do that a little bit!

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

As the saying goes, “Early birds get worms.” We truly believe this. Because we never get up so early, and never go to the school to do the research at 5:30 a.m, all of the things we taste are rather fresh, and they are totally a novelty to us! Not only do we realize that school is such a bustling place in the morning, but we enjoy doing exercise with local residents. That feeling is so great!

The majority of the members in this club are senior citizens, which surprises us very much, for they become healthier and happier by joining this club. We do hope your family members, especially senior citizens, can get to know this morning community club and try to join us to pursue a healthy and enjoyable life.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thanks to Mr. Pan, the secretary-general of ChineseYuanji & Kungfa Research Association, Mr. Jan, the board chairman of Chinese Tai Chi Chuan Association, and Mr. Zhong, the director of Wu Shin Ba Bu Chikung Association, for offering many photos and information so that we can design the Web site smoothly. After the secretary-general Pan’s permission, the music on the Web site is allowed to be used.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

When we are interviewing Mr. Jan, he tells us that a recent report shows that not only can exercising Tai Chi Chuan give us good balance, but also prevent us from falling over and getting fractures. Exercise really can make people healthier and save some money for us because we need to see a doctor less often. Now the government is advocating the ideal of all the people exercising together, for example, losing weight 100 pounds and encouraging people to jog, etc. Although this is a very good idea, it overlooks those who need to be cared about—senior citizens in our society. They wake up in the early morning, and they tend to care about their own health as well. However, they are too shy to taste different things, so they don’t know how to join our club and do not dare to take the initiative to participate with us. Even so, we discover that as long as people try to encourage them more and more, they will have more confidence. Take an old lady for example, during our interview, we require her to take a picture with us. She, however, turns us down because she feels that she is not photogenic at all. But we have realized so long as we spend more time communicating with them, they can be much more enthusiastic too!
