Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is located at Kaohsiung, which is a world trade center city in Taiwan. We have noted for the Kaohsiung Port, which is one of the most famous ports in the world. Its ranking is the second place and brings a lot of fortune to Taiwan. However, it's also the most important city of steel industry in Taiwan.Usually, this kind of industry city could be filled with air pollution or other contaminations. But Kaohsiung is a special city that it has less pollutions in recent years. Why? It is because we people in Kaohsiung have a sense of awareness of our environment. One of the crucial elements is trees. We grow lots of green plants to beautify our environment. And we call these trees green giants, which means they not only prevent the environment from being polluted, but also devote themselves to us. Therefore, we'd like to say the green giants are a part of our community, Kaohsiung.

2. Summary of Our Project

Since the trees devoted them so much to our Kaohsiung, we do really want to pay more attention to them and care about them. Therefore, we decide to make a project about trees in Kaohsiung. We would like to evoke awareness of environment protection and make whoever can see this project know how important trees are on our earth.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

The biggest problem we met might be the transportation. Since some special trees are at suburban area, it is not easy for us to get there by bicycles. We overcome this problem because we have volunteer parents and teachers drove us to the place we want to interview. Another problem is doing the webpages. We students knew very little about using special computer softwares to beautify our webpages. It was lucky that we had nice computer and art teachers who gave us advices and taught us about computer skills. We do really appreciate this.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Union is power. Try your best and you can make it!

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We are junior high school students and at first knew little about computers. In the beginning, we only use computers to play on-line games, but after doing this project, we learned lots of skills to make a webpage and design it. We get to know that union is power and we should accept people's advices instead of doing things by our own free wills. We want to thank our school for supporting us in every aspect, including hardwares and softwares.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We use computers, cellphones, scanner, printer, e-mails, digital cameras and so on. It is quite conveient for us to use internet and other hi-tec tools to do this project. In this way, we saved lots of time and learned more.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We evoked an activity which is called 'save our best friend' to save one of the oldest tree in our school. We let people around our neighborhood knew that trees are our important resource and we should cherish them a lot more.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our community started to pay more attention to the issues of environment, which is really touching and moving. Since we live in a quick pace, it is rare for us to care about our living space and city. They show the spirit of loving our city and earth.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

We firstly went home and told our parents to help us on this project. After that, we announced to our students in school that the city and the trees need our attention. Then, after that, people started to care about this issue.
