Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

The scope of our research is focused to Ailan plateau. This is because that our school is exactly located on Ailan plateau, and it is the main inhabitation location of Bazai Tribe. We want to know further the history and environment where we located, and many of students of our school are of Bazai tribe, or they are only of the clan of Pinpu tribe. We hope to uncover the living environment of their ancestors and the legends of them, which is going to be lost. So that our schoolmates may regain their history and allow the world to know the early feature of Bazai.

2. Summary of Our Project

We first made introduction of the local environment of Puli and we also introduced the range Bazai Tribe spread. We then made detail description of Bazai Tribe lived in Puli. We also gave serial legends of Bazai Tribe, myths and stories and analyzed their cultural perspective. We have also project research report on their song and hymns to add the entertaining and amusing taste. In addition, we also made serial questionnaire to find out how much, or any understanding of Bazai Tribe in local people and people live in other part of Taiwan.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

In our school, we have 6 computer classrooms and we used No. 1, No. 3 and Information Center, where most of the computers are Pentium 4 class computers. They are all quite efficient in film processing, animation producing and web pages. The school has an ADSL dedicated line connection through Nantou County Network Center for linking Taiwan Academic Network (TANET). We completed our work under such a good environment.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

■ Data Sorting We have to search for useful data from limited data sources in budget time, and sort out from them and the materials available from books and networks to be a report with completeness. But we used mostly the data collected from books. As we have to compile and sort the data, we must read all the data through. In order to complete this project research report, we have almost learnt them by heart, which spent us a lot of time. We can almost be tourist guides.

■ Communication and Coordination The next, we have to do field investigation for finding genuine Bazai people and hold interview with them to describe the life at then. Since some of the question we raised are rather privacy involved, we have to arrange our questions skillfully and we have to be thoughtful. It is somewhat difficult. Also, we visited some non-Bazai people who have profound understanding of Bazai, such as Jang Shi-Lang and Mr. Lai Guan-Yi, a priest. Though we did accumulated experience in interview, but the professional issues, we are of the first time, so our performance is rather rigid. We also visited Mrs. Pan Jin-Yu, an aged woman of Bazai Tribe at her age of 91. We got through via Priest Lai. Only when we were face to face with her had we found the difficulty in communicating with the senior citizens who are mainly Taiwanese speaking, while we are young kids with poor command of Taiwanese. We were walking along a rocky trail when conducting the interview.。

■ Preparation We also visited local artistic and cultural groups and the activities they planned related with Bazai Tribe. Since they placed emphasis much on the advance coordination and communication, so we made no less than 3 advance communication to make them understand our purpose and what is our scope of interest. This part of work, we have gone into very detail.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

There are 5 locals of Puli in our team and the rest are from other areas, but even so, only a couple of the 5 local teammates had heard of Bazai. So, in the beginning, we were looking and working this subject as outsiders. So, what we really gained from this project should be that we have deeper understanding of Puli, of the environment we are situated in. We are also to introduce the scene and the features of Puli, allowing more people to know our Puli, we all converted ourselves as guides of Puli and the experts with ample knowledge of Bazai Tribe.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

No matter where you go, Community is stressed all the time. What we have done is exactly conforming to this perspective. We have also learnt the professional process of news gathering, editing and producing web pages. We learnt to use internet and books to find the data we need. We know how to identify the key issue for further exploration. We know how to work together, to coordinate and how to find what we need and what is best from the massive data. We know how to get along with different people and we know there are different modes of learning. When there is disagreement, we learnt the importance of reasonable coordination and figure out the most benefit way to both sides.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We completed our task through field investigation, in which we received help from many kind and enthusiastic people, and we were permitted to with many opportunities to do our interview. In the first, we make communication through telephone to let the counterparty understand our purpose and process and ask if our counterparty would accept our interview and complete arrangement. At the end of the interview, we would inquire if we have the permission to publish, after showing our records for review. We would proceed the next step after having such permission. We have visited Mr. Wang Yi, who provided us a lot of materials related to Bazai Tribe and accepted our interview. We also visited Priest Lai Gwang-Yi, who is in possession treasure of Bazai Tribe materials, but in addition, he has other material of Pinpu Tribe. He is very enthusiastic in providing us lot of materials, he showed us the debris of Bazai Tribe culture he had collected and helped us to reach other people who have sufficient knowledge of Bazai Tribe. We visited Teacher Jan Shi-Lang, he has work published giving guide to Bazai Tribe. He had conducted also field investigation, when telling us, he gave us his points of view and the information and materials he had gathered in the field investigation, and shared his experience. It turned our interview into some kind of lecture. Of course, we also visited many other people, who gave a lot of advices and information.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through the process of the research, we actually learnt the way to interview and to communicate, such as the handling of professional questions and those involved with personal privacy. We understand the necessity of advanced preparation and accommodation in cooperating with other people. We have the chance of understand the original feature of Puli and we gained acquaintance with our living environment. The research turned us into fairly good understanding of and some sort of connection with Bazai from a group of youngster who had never heard of Bazai Tribe. We also learnt to extract and compose limited data and materials into fairly attractive and entertaining report, with limit of time. We also saw how a diminishing people survive from a narrow space and gain their room.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

(1). we spent New Years Holidays in San Yi

We were very excited when Priest Lai Gwang-Yi told us that there was an event of Bazai Tribe in San Yi “2003 New Year, Plough and Posting”. We decided to attend, but the location, Li Yu Elementary School is far and short of transportation means. When we were trying to solve the problem, Mr. Lay told that we could take free ride of Wu Niu Lan Culture Association, with free delicious lunch. We were touched with the passion of Mr. Lai and the hospitality of Bazai people.

(2). Listening to songs of Apu

When we told Apu that we want to visit her, listen to the tales and her songs. Apu was rather conservative that she was not good enough and she would invite us to sing together. We were thinking that she might invite a couple of aged persons to sing together. We did not think that it was a team made of more than a dozen. We were very delighted. When they heard that we wanted to tape and to produce web pages for them to let the world know more about Bazai Tribe. They really did their best to show off. We gained a lot and we are very grateful.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

■ Discoveries

(1). Community Tribe

We knew now, but only after this research, that the communities around our school are tribe famous of courageous and daring fighters with witchcraft of flying over sky. It is very lucky to enroll in this school. It seems that people used to stay on the site where our school located was a bunch of people like Harley Porter, and we are those come to learn the magic. It is really interesting

(2). People with determination

In the school, we are high school student, simple, plain and we have nothing much than students. After going through this research, we found that there are contributors around us, devoting for the tribes and communities quietly, not for fame, for money, and sacrificing their leisure time. They devoted their best, they want their work perfect and they influenced us in our future career planning.

■ Lessons

We are totally new in new gathering, and we had limited of time, so almost all the interviews were always on a rush, and we were not really fully prepared. Most of them were very kind and tolerant. But, the chance of refusal is not prevented. When interviewing Hometown Care Association, Mrs. Chang gave us a chance education. It is embarrassing but we drew much out of the teaching. When interviewing Apu, we did not expect there are so many senior citizens available for interview, and what is worse was that not a single member of us is fluent in Taiwanese. We were totally out of control in ourselves. We need to learn more, really.

■ Surprises

We turned ourselves from knowing nothing to be having every single piece we can get is already a surprise. What is more exciting is that we found that there are lot of volunteers working endlessly aiming similarly to ours, Looking at the pictures, watching their play and listening to their music, we feel proud and surprise and we respect their effort in providing new life to the legend. We hope that our efforts are similarly valued.
