Project Overview

1. Description of Our Team

Our team consists in the following students: Roland (18), Patrick (18), Andrada (17) and Robert (17). Our work was coordinated by our geography teacher, Blanaru Marian. We decided to join our forces and develop this project because we saw so many people around us that are indifferent to the handful of enviromental issues that are covering our planet. The student’s gathered information from speciallity books, informed persons and the internet, realized a survey in the means of knowing the level of ackowlegment of the population from the affected areas described in the project about the environmental problems covered, and they themselves realized the web1site. Our teached supervised us in our activities.

2. Summary of Our Project

The purpose of our project is to inform the people about the environmental problems caused by mining activities worldwide, relating to a case that has happend in our area. We described different mining methods, how they affect the environment and sollutions to reduce the impact that these activities have on the environment. Eventhough we exemplified a case from our area, the mining activities affect the whole planet and numerous accidents have happened just in the past few years, resulting human loss and enviromental damages

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:not sure

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

E. Additional comments concerning your computer and/or Internet access (Optional):

In our school we have 5 clasroom(97 workstations with internet conection )

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

One of the problems we encountered was that the server we had to register our project on went down for a few days, but luckly the term of registration was delayed. Another problem we encountered was the fact that the quantitty of useful information for our project that we disposed of was very low, but we went directly to the source, at the local headquarters of the Enviromental Protection Organisation.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Our project aims to make the population of our planet aware of the impacts that, in generally economic activities have, because as humans have needs they have to fulfill, they gather resources form our planet’s natural „store”, not caring about the scars they leave behind, or how many lives they take, just to fulfilling one or two of their needs. Therefor we covered in particullary the mining area of the economic activity, as it mostly impacts the environment in our area.

6. How did your activities and research for this Doors to Diplomacy Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

As our project covers a global issue, that is the wrong use or methods used, even abuse of the natural resources of our planet, it perfectly fits in the curriculum standard of our school because this problem is debated in one of the classes, called „Geography – Actual global problems”. We, the students developed our comunicative abillities, as well as the way we interract with the world arround us. We elevated our research methods and skills from doing the tight information gathering, applying of the survey, interpretation of accuired information and systematisation of the available useful information. We distribued the work and tasks between us, taking in consideration each others abilitties and possibilitties. Because our project is covering a international issue as mining methods and their environmental impacts worldwide, we got familliar and better understand what international issues are, and because we try to fix this issue, calling upon all the nations, the diplomatic concept was applied. As we developed and conducted our research, including the survey we noticed that the actual educational system in our country is based on encouraging students to improve their practical abilitties and not their informational abilitties, like the elders of our comunitty, that have studied in the communist era back in 1989. Taking in consideration the fact that the community we mostly interract with is our school, we feel responsable to firstly applying our project in our school because of the facts mentioned above, regarding our actual educational system. In our activity, the Internet was proven to be more useful than the traditional ways of informing because, even if the raw information we found in our area of research was useful, it was covering exclusively our region, unlike the Iternet that treated international issues.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your Doors to Diplomacy project?

Considering that we dispozed of personal equipment, like computers, cameras (video/photo), phones, vehicle, we used all this technology in gathering all the necessary data for developing our project. The computer was proven to be the most valuable tehnology we used because, we mostly accessed it to accuire the information we needed

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Doors to Diplomacy project both on-line and in person.

By getting involved with this project in the Doors to Diplomacy program, we became the nexus between the awareness of global issues and the level of acknowlegement of the population from our area firstly, but also worldwide. Through the raw example that we brought within our project, and the fact that it envolves mainly our country, we represent our nation in front of the whole world aiming to prevent such environmental degradation elsewhere in the future. On our website we intend to build such a community that supports global environmental issues.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Our project intends to change people's point of view regarding the enviromental situation of the world we live in. As the visitors will follow every aspect of our project, they will learn the importance of seriously taking in consideration the ecological alternatives that can be applied to reduce the enviromental impact of the human activity, more precisely the economic branch, and even more precisely the mining activity around the globe. We hope to bound strong working relationships with different enviromental organisations worldwide that would sustain our cause so we could push the frontiers of our project even further. Therefor we are aiming to make the whole world aware of our project and it's targets.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

By applying our survey, we managed to inform part of our local community about the fact, an important global issue, and eventually making it one of their concerns. We got help from alot of persons from our community, starting with this survey, tutorial for web design (Loiszly Sandor), informational mirrors from our teachers (Tataru Aurica), the local Environmental Protection Organisation, therefor through this way we would like to thank all the persons that contribued and volunteerd in developing this project.
