Description of Our Community: The Chinese calligraphy is an unique form of lettering that contributes to the field of art history, which its origin could be traced back to over 3,000 years ago. Chinese calligraphers convey one's messages and values of nature, society and life by applying stylistic symbols and strokes to portrays the distinctive thinking and ideology of Chinese culture. This remarkable form of art not only represents the inheritance of Chinese culture, yet, it also acts as a significant material that records the Chinese history of life and beliefs. Since Chinese calligraphy profoundly expressed the aesthetic conceptions and artistic spirits of Chinese culture, the Chinese calligraphy not only appeals to the oriental countries, its popularity has further increased all around the globe. Especially in Taiwan, we could say that Chinese calligraphy is ubiquitous. People can see spring couplets or advertising sign boards written in Chinese calligraphy on front doors of houses and streets. This piece of tradition has been perfectly preserved and inherited in Taiwan, which numerous amount of excellent artworks are collected in museums. Besides, there are countless young bloods continuously dedicating to the field of Chinese calligraphy.

Project Description: Chinese calligraphy is a traditional culture that has been passed down for years. The earliest history of Chinese calligraphy could be traced back to 3,000 years ago during the Shang Dynasty. As time pass, and dynasty alters, in order to promote education and optimize language and communication, many emperors had constantly modified the styles of calligraphy, deriving various forms of lettering. According to the Analect of Confucius, “to do a good job, one must first sharpen one's tools.” In order to produce a perfect artwork, the calligraphy brushes and inks are extremely crucial. Particular materials of wool and handles can produce exceptional textures of feelings; Different vapor of lignums can create unique tone colors of inks; Papers made up with specific type of pulp can construct extraordinary effects to artworks. As technology advances nowadays, the manufacture of calligraphy brushes and inks have also improved overtime. Although brushes and inks are indispensable in writing Chinese calligraphy, after all, the tools are lifeless. In order to produce exquisite art pieces, having a professional calligrapher is essential. In the numerous amount of Chinese calligraphers, male calligraphers occupy the majority of the population. However, there are also several female Chinese calligraphers who has created some of the most prominent Chinese calligraphy art pieces, and she is, Song Lian Chang.
