Description of Our Community: The Houtong area located between Jiufen and Pingxi is surrounded by high mountains. Keelung River flows through from south to north, making it a mountain town in the long and narrow strip of valley. The residents live by the mountains and river. Due to the geological location, it is hit by the northeastern monsoon every year. It rains over 200 days a year. The place was developed because of the rich mines and also declined because of the mines in Taiwan stopped to produce gold and coal.

Project Description: A quiet mountain town used to rise and fall with the coal mining. People have gradually forgotten that “Houtong” used to be the hometown of coal. The establishment of the coal-mine ecological park will reacquaint the public with the “historical relics of mining.” Through the questionnaire, document collection, and local guide, the research team will have a deeper understanding of the mining history in the Houtong area.
