Description of Our Community: Description of Our Community: Xizhou Township is located at the southernmost part of Changhua County in Taiwan. It is named Xizhou because it is an alluvion, which is floating on the west and south of Luoxi of Jhuoshuei River. It covers an area of about 75.8310 square kilometers. It is the third largest township in Changhua County. Xizhou Township Office holds cultural festival every year. In recent years, the festival theme is the black mud of Jhuoshuei River. The river brings abundant water and black mud. The black mud nourishes the land to produce various rich crops and foster rural culture.
Project Description: “The Mud Festival” is focused on Xizhou. Xizhou is located at the southernmost of Changhua County. It relies on the mother river —Jhuoshuei River,which has abundant water and fertile black mud to irrigate the land. The farmers work hard on the land to produce rich agriculture products. This project started with Xizhou geography and agricultural history and students participated in the cultural activity-“The Black Mud Festival” held by township office. By means of investigation and interview, the activity process is recorded in details. It is briefly introduced as below: as for the source and background, it introduces the geographical environment, agricultural history, water saving sports and black soil & fertile farmland in Xizhou. As the opening activity of The Black Mud Festival, In Remembrance of Troy is the epic environment drama played by Golden Bough Theater which is filled with grass-roots energy. In the opening ceremony, several performance groups and the farmer’s market composed of the local agricultural products and shops are recorded in details. The mud man parade is the MICHIJUNE activity with the theme of agricultural product held by various groups and schools in Xizhou. The black mud contest is the physical and mental contest with the theme of black mud. Meanwhile, the returning-home concert of Bobby Chen who was born in Xizhou and the performance of other singers and vocalists are also recorded; the ecologically agricultural method is used for farming and there is also the Shanghui Journey with the restoration paddy field and rich ecology.During the process of our participating in activity, interviewing and writing the records, we have expanded our understanding of local landscape and humanity. According to this, we have also thought about and put forward our imagination and expectation for the future of hometown.
