Description of Our Community: Founded in 2002, Taiwan Guide Dog Association, as a nonprofit organization, devoted itself to promote and develop local guide dogs in Taiwan. It provides guide dogs with no charge, and assures that every blind person in Taiwan has the right to live a better life with the aid of guide dogs. Taiwan Guide Dog Association, cooperating with WunDe elementary school, is working on “Reading Companion Dogs Program”. With the passion and profession of association, it’s highly possible to train stray dogs into reading companion dogs, accompanying underprivileged children and even pupil with deviant behaviors. The magic of adorable dogs can calm their minds and make them open their hearts. Help form the habit of reading and even fall in love with reading. Taiwan Guide Dog Association will not only aid the blind, but extend its influence to education and help more and more children in Taiwan. Dogs will not be merely man's best friends, but best mates bonding life, living and ecology, making this world a better place.

Project Description: Located on Bagua Mountain, WunDe elementary school is the highest elementary school in Taiwan. It is part of Tri-Mountain National Park bicycle path, which provides the best environments for tourists who seeking for the healthy and thrilling lifestyles. There is an animal shelter near WunDe elementary school, and one of our teachers arranges a new type of course featuring “stray dogs”. It encourages students to immerse in ecology, enhancing intimacy and mutual benefits between dogs and men. Our teachers believe the stereotype that stray dogs are worthless and harmful can be overturned. Not only does it change students’ point of view on lives, but also promote education of sympathy. Therefore, WunDe elementary school and Taiwan Guide Dog Association initiate “Reading Companion Dogs Program”. Dedicated to study how to reform stray dogs into companion dogs, and one day it may make a great influence on every school. Children will begin to love reading with companion dogs. The research directions are elaborated bellow: First, gain deeper understanding and relationship between Taiwan Guide Dog Association. It’s not just merely attending association’s propaganda, but make a good use of the opportunity of closely observing the training progress of guide dogs. Feel the joy of companionship and possibility of change while running and playing with the friendliest animal in the world. It brings up the idea whether stray dogs can be trained to become beneficial to the society. Second, WunDe elementary school want to be the pioneer to combine community development, responsibilities in life and school education in order to provide more resources for those in need.
