Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

In this project, we investigated the difference between the habits of people in different places when they are eating ice. We mainly investigated the people in Northern Taiwan, especially the ones in New Taipei City. Still, we observed the people in other places in Taiwan. We observed different types of people about their habits, not limited to age, identity, etc.. In conclusion, you will be informed about the different habits of ice eating by different types of people.

2. Summary of Our Project

On our website, we provide information about the ice in Taiwan. Ice plays an essential role in Taiwan. We are in a subtropical area, so when the weather gets extremely hot, ice is something we use to cool down. We identify the types of ice that are popular here in Taiwan, and also how much the people here like ice. We also included the history of ice in Taiwan, since it is one of the most important reasons why people are eating ice so often. Ice plays an important role in Taiwanese culture, and “breaking the ice” between ice and us is totally worth it.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:4-6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We’ve been facing a lot of challenges and problems since we are doing this project. For example, we pondered about the ice traditions’ scope limit and the types we are doing. Second, we couldn’t successfully contact the ice shop, or the ice shop is unwilling to be interviewed, so we are considering changing the type of interview object. Next, our project across the season of winter, many ice shops have closed down, so it is hard to find a shop that continues doing business. Last, it is difficult to popularize and send out questionnaires and organize. These problems affect our project progress very much.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

It is a great honor for students to participate in this cyber fair. We want to let everyone know more about Linkou ice, so we join this competition to let everyone interested and know about it. We wanted to make Linkou ice more famous.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

We have this after-school elective course, we have to spend the other time working on this competition. When we are having an after-school elective course, we are going to organize information about our topic. We also have to visit the other ice shops to more understand what happens during their shop. We also need to interview content discussion, form to collect information, and literature discussion. In this course, we learn some skills about searching for information and being more confident when facing strangers when you want to interview them. We learn to discuss with others, share ideas, and work together as a team during the course. We can search information online to let us better understand specific ideas and ask the shop owner. About projects that fit into the requirements of school, we’ll first discuss the topic we want, and school always wants some good reasons about why we do this topic, so we need to discover and to find out somethings in our life, and try to persuade the school. The discoveries about our school’s education’s benefits is they want you to have your own idea, not just copy others or just the idea from the teacher, I think it’s a good way for students. Using the internet to learn is better than the traditional way (no electric products), because students can have more information and ideas, like our traditional way to teach, we just can use the limited information to search. The internet's information is more than just using books, and it will be very helpful when we use the internet.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

We have our personal computers (including MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 2020, MacBook Air 2022, iPad Pro, iPad Air 5), telephone, mobile phones (iPhone 14 Pro for photography, iPhone 12 Pro for recording), and books. The personal computer is for editing text , organizing and searching online resources. Telephones were used to connect with respondents. Mobile is mainly used for interviews, including photographs and recording interview content. We also have books for text resources. All the tools are personal technology products. The mobile phone may be the most valuable tool, it helps us to record the interview, and the interview is a big important part in our work. The search engine is the most helpful technology, we can search for many online resources about ice history and type.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

At the beginning we has decided to interview 2~3 stores, but the time we try to connect is at October. Many stores stop selling ice or close due to season, because of that there are only one store that can accept interview. We also have happed some troubles such as no one reply to call, the store can’t accept are required, or the store don’t understand our purpose.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

We created this project because we want everyone to know the origin of Linkou Ice. Although we have asked students for their opinions, some students only responded like one ice cube a day. Also because we are curious about the origin of ice. So we chose this topic.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our team has used a form to ask everyone to provide us with some opinions. Although we saw some ice cream shops in Linkou online, we called several but no one was willing to let us interview until we found one. We called 'Blue Lamp Cafe ' and the owner was willing to be interviewed, but he said that if there were customers, he would help them first. We want to say 'Thank you for let us interview'.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

At this time we discovered how people in Linkou eat ice, we knew what is their favorite, when they will eat ice, and how they think about when things eat ice. We learn how to interview someone, like when we interview store owners we do many things like we make them question, call the shore owner if we can interview them but when we ask we get rejected so we have to ask another shore owner we can interview them, and we have to make record what the shore owner say.
