Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Tamsui, is a town full of history. Located at the outlet of the Tamsui River system in the Taipei Basin, it opened for trade in 1858 AD, and is the earliest developed port in northern Taiwan, except for the narrow plain of the Tamsui River Estuary, half of Thailand is covered by the Datun Mountain Mausoleum. Today's Tamsui District, formerly known as 'Huwei', is a general term that refers to the area around the Tamsui River Basin and even the whole of northern Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

Teacher Su Wenkui is the founder of the Huwei Cultural and Historical Studio and was once an elder at the Tamsui Presbyterian Church. Currently serving as the director of the Tamkang High School History Museum, he is a friendly and amiable person who always treats students with a smiling face. His approachability has earned him excellent rapport. In addition to this, Teacher Su has made countless contributions to all things related to Tamsui and its cultural heritage. Intrigued by Teacher Su's life, we initiated oral interviews, collected information, and created a website, hoping to showcase the unique personality of Teacher Su Wenkui to the world

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:2-3

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dial-up modem

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:2-3

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

This time, we used oral information to collect information, and the content of the teacher's words needed to be sorted out a lot, so it was difficult for the teacher's time to make an appointment, so we could only use the class time to interview. Although we had a university president to guide us in website architecture, we were a little rusty when we did it for the first time, and we didn't know where to start. After countless Xi studies, the seniors have taught us again and again to make the website the best it can be.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Contributes to the preservation of local history, general historical knowledge, bridges the gap with the older generation, and provides a deeper understanding of the curriculum. As we initially had little knowledge about Teacher Su Wenkui, through numerous interviews, we learned how crucial cultural heritage is. We were born in Tamsui, a place with rich history, yet we only had a superficial understanding of the landing of George Leslie Mackay here. With the assistance of senior students, we could delve into professional research skills, making our projects more refined.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

The reason for choosing 'Huwei Storyteller - Teacher Su Wenkui' as our theme is because Teacher Su has had a significant impact on Tamsui. Teacher Su founded the Huwei Cultural and Historical Studio and served as an elder at the Tamsui Presbyterian Church. He initiated a course on historical site interpretation and currently holds the position of director at the Tamkang High School History Museum. Through oral interviews, we gathered a wealth of information directly from Teacher Su about Tamsui's cultural heritage. These firsthand accounts greatly assisted in enriching the content of our website.

Throughout the process of collecting and discussing information, we also interviewed many of Teacher Su's students. These teachers enthusiastically shared their longstanding relationships with Teacher Su and even shared many anecdotes related to him, information that is not documented in regular books or on the internet. It is through such insights that we gained a more comprehensive understanding of Teacher Su. We hope to use the power of the internet to promote and celebrate Teacher Su's contributions.'

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Scanner .Desktop computer and Laptop .Projector .Smartphone .Digital Camera .Cloud storage .Libraries .Museums

When it came to acquiring equipment and tools needed, we were very fortunate, as we were already in possession of several hardware items that became invaluable towards our completion of the project, such as Laptop computers and art tablets. The school also lent a us hand by lending us one of their state-of-the-art video cameras for recording purposes. These tools came in handy on more occasions than one. The laptop computers made the conversion and organization process of material information a lot easier than it would have been and carried a number of useful software that helped in their own way, from image processing to content production, such as Photoshop and Lightroom. Smartphones also played a huge role in the completion of the project, as it allowed teammates to stay connected not only to each other, but also to the latest information and progress. All it took was the push of a few buttons and new and essential information can immediately be shared and received by all members of the group, no matter where they are. The laptop and smartphone proved to be extremely useful items for all they have accomplished in link with the thematic project.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Each participant who participated in the International Schools Networking Expo had a mission to introduce themselves to people across the globe. In the past few months, we have started to interview key figures, collect information, organize documents, conduct field investigations, take photographs, and document. We will organize all the information about Mr. Su Wenkui on the Internet, and gradually make all our literature into a website with diversified content, and hope that through the far-reaching power of the Internet, people around the world can better understand Mr. Su Wenkui's great achievements and our community.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Making high school life more fulfilling has enriched our learning experience. Throughout the process, we've acquired additional project skills, giving us a more refined set of abilities compared to other high school students. Although our free time has become more limited, we find it very worthwhile. We get to meet different people—some proficient in document processing, others showcasing strong leadership skills—allowing us to learn from various perspectives.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

The main reason why we wanted to participate in the '2024 International School Internet Expo' competition was because we were inspired by our seniors. Last year, they entered the '20223nternational Cyber Expo' competition under the theme of 'Tamkang High School Makai Expo', and they won the highest award of the year, the Gold Award, for this project. Because of the outstanding performance of the previous year's seniors, we, the younger generation, aspired to be like them and shine on the stage one day. However, although we had such ambition, our plans were delayed due to our own laziness or that of our group members. Under the supervision of the team leader, the team members began to realize the time constraint and worked hard to help each other to make the website complete.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

During this project, I found many things that I had never done or thought about, such as how to set up a website, compile information, etc. I found that the exchange between seniors and juniors can stimulate more ideas. This is not only more efficient, but also saves a lot of time when reviewing information. The atmosphere of brainstorming is an integral part of the process, and the feeling of moving forward towards the same goal brings more emotion to the whole project; and the amazing thing is that they were awarded the World Platinum Award last time.
