Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Located in the central part of Tainan City, Guantian District has the highest annual production of water chestnut shells in the country and is thus known as the 'hometown of water chestnut shells'. In recent years, Guantian has been facing a serious population exodus, resulting in a constant loss of young labourers. In the face of such pressure, the local industry has developed a new business opportunity through the sustainable management of the industry, turning the water chestnut shells, which used to be treated as waste, into environmentally friendly fertiliser and sorbent packs after charring.

2. Summary of Our Project

In recent years, due to the rise in environmental awareness, products made from crop waste have also become a topic of public concern. 'Water Caltrop Biochar' is a product that uses discarded water chestnut shells, which are worthless after consumption, to give it a new life through charring and increasing its value. We have discovered the business opportunities behind this product and through this competition, we are promoting this 'The Treasure of Guantian' to the public. This is a great opportunity to promote this product to the public and make it more accessible to the public.

3. Our Computer and Internet Access

A. Percentage of students using the Internet at home:more than 50%

B. Number of workstations with Internet access in the classroom:more than 6

C. Connection speed used in the classroom:dedicated connection

D. Number of years our classroom has been connected to the Internet:more than 6

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

When I first came into contact with the Dreamweaver software, since all the team members were newbies, they would inevitably face many problems when using it to make web design. Fortunately, the teacher was there to solve our problems in time, and gave We have lots of suggestions and advice about web pages.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

There was a proverb in Taiwan in the past: 'When you eat fruit, you must worship the head of the tree.' Human beings benefit from nature, but they don't know how to drink water and think of the source. Instead, they further harm it. Seeing the nature that is full of wounds, we don't have a trace of it. As action and action, this group wants to use the green , so that organisms and nature can coexist for mutual benefit.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the era of advanced science and technology, human beings continue to develop for economic development, resulting in a burden on the earth. In recent years, due to the rise of environmental awareness, products made from crop waste have also become a topic of public concern. 'Diamond shell charcoal' is a waste shell that has no value after eating water chestnut. After carbonization, it increases its value and gives it new life. The group found the business opportunities behind its products and pushed the 'treasure of guantian' to the public through this competition, so that more people can know it. Our school uses the Internet with optical fiber to access the Internet. The team members transmit data and discussions through the cloud, line and Facebook, so that we can not only discuss face-to-face in school, but also go home for online meetings and raise ideas and questions all the time.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Desktop computers and notebook computers are used to search information, make web pages and pictures The scanner is used to draw patterns and pictures by hand Mobile phones and recorders are used for taking photos, recording and video recording The photocopier is used to copy the collected data Dreamweaver for web page making Photoshop is used to make pictures Word for data consolidation Power director for film editing In order to be familiar with water chestnut and water chestnut charcoal, we collected news reports, customer satisfaction feedback and the relevant website of Guantian Wujin Cooperative. In addition to the information on the Internet, we conducted on-site interviews to deeply understand water chestnut, and during its harvest period After harvesting, go to Guantian to gain an in-depth understanding of the production process, uses and contribution to the community economy of diamond shell charcoal.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

When you first arrived in Guantian, the first thing to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city was to taste the fresh city. In this environment, I don't seem to feel pressure. I walked on the road with a relaxed pace. A group of people moved forward under the planning of navigation. When they arrived at the appointed place, Mr. Li Zhengxian warmly introduced to us. Under his generous introduction, Our understanding of diamond shell charcoal is a step closer. Agriculture and forestry farms are the base where Guantian converts agricultural materials into biochar. The left and right sides are full of agricultural by-products. We thought these were no big deal. Understand the mystery, each step has its intention, and exert the spirit of not wasting from the inside to the outside, this is called the real implementation of environmental protection. We also went to their local cultural production areas to experience how to introduce more benefits of diamond shell charcoal to the environment to the public. Whether in recycling water chestnut shell, firing water chestnut shell carbon or in the end, the community economy has made good use of resources. Through this competition opportunity, we have changed from a child who only talks about environmental protection to a real environmental ambassador.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

After returning from the official field interview, we learned that guantian Wujin has the effects of deodorization and dehumidification in daily life. However, due to poor marketing methods and insufficient advertising, its popularity is not high. In order to let more people know its good, we decided to make a small experiment, put aromatics in the jar and add water caltrop biochar to make an experimental group, Interact with the teachers and students of the whole school to understand everyone's acceptance of this product, and let the relatives and friends around know that there is this good environmental protection thing, so that the diamond shell carbon is closer to everyone's life. We also conducted online questionnaires to let many people understand the benefits of rhombus charcoal, and most people know that rhombus charcoal can promote the development of local community industries. of people are also willing to buy to support this product.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To Auntie Xiuhuang: After we decided to use water chestnut charcoal as the theme of this time, we began to look for places to explore, and found that the harvesting period of water chestnut was the days when we visited. With the mentality of giving it a try, We went to the water chestnut field together to see if there were any farmers who were willing to let us go into the fields. We met Aunt Xiuhuang who asked and agreed to let us go into the fields. None of us had any experience in farming. After a whole day of experience in the fields, we finally got to know the farmers. The hard work, but also really understand the passion of the name Kaohsiung. To: Former District Mayor Yan Nengtong When he first took over the post of Guantian District, he found that local residents burned the shell of water chestnut directly on the roadside, causing serious problems of environmental pollution. In order to improve this problem, the mayor began to To find a way to turn the diamond shell into biochar that can be recycled. After the district chief's explanation, I learned that we have many shortcomings. With a learning attitude, in the end, it can be said that it has benefited a lot and broadened knowledge. From zero to existence, from front to back, all the relationships showed the district head's generosity and enthusiasm. The conversation during the process did not feel any stingy, but was full of vitality. This is what we lack and it is worth emulating.
