Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our hometown, Lukang, is located in central Taiwan and close to the Taiwan Strait, because it is the closest port to China, so in the Qing Dynasty it was designated by the government as the official trade port between central Taiwan and Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. Since then, it has attracted a large number of Quanzhou people to trade and settle here, and became one of the three prosperous ports in Taiwan during the Qing Dynasty. Although it once prospered because of the development of commerce in the past, the economic development of Lukang gradually stagnated due to factors such as the gradual siltation of the port and the lack of railways passing through Lukang during the Japanese rule. However, because of its early development, Lukang has retained many monuments, historical buildings, temples and festivals, traditional pastries and handicrafts, and has now become an important tourist resource to attract tourists from all over the world. Walking into Lukang is just like walking into a living history museum.

2. Summary of Our Project

A Taiwanese singer sang about the contradictions of the Lukang people and also sang about the problem of preserving old houses. 'I heard that they dug up the red bricks of their hometown and painted them with cement walls, and the people of their hometown got what they wanted, but they lost what they had...' In the past, there were many century-old houses in Lukang that were abandoned and overgrown because the owners could not repair them, and even could not escape the fate of being demolished. But now, Lukang, with the support of the government and private forces, the old houses have begun to be restored, and many young people are slowly attracted to return to their hometowns to start new careers. At present, Lukang's new sightseeing spot ' Hexing Youth Innovation Base ' is the best example of the Changhua County Government's commitment to preserving Lukang's cultural heritage and reusing abandoned spaces. Here we can see diverse spaces that successfully combine youth entrepreneurship, cultural and artistic innovation, sightseeing spots, preservation of historic buildings and authentic community life. Walking on the old street of Lukang, time seems to stand still, taking people back to the past and re-feeling the beauty of the past, but careful observation in the alleys and old houses, young people began to return to our hometown to show different creativity. Lukang is changing, and such a change is worth everyone walking into Lukang again to explore and discover.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Lukang's new sightseeing spot ' Hexing Youth Innovation Base ' is the best example of a diverse spaces that successfully combine youth entrepreneurship, cultural and artistic innovation, sightseeing spots, preservation of historic buildings and real community life. Even with the threat of COVID-19, with the efforts of everyone to unite and protect, the old house has a new life, and the art and culture can still be inherited and innovated.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Our project study mainly presents the role of Hexing Youth Innovation Base in the past history of Lukang, and further studies the development of the salt industry in Lukang and the police system during the Japanese rule. In addition, through the active intervention and assistance of the government, we have learned that the preservation of historical buildings and the restoration and activation of old houses can coexist at the same time. The restored old houses are supported by the government to encourage young people to return to their hometown to start businesses and exchange rents through providing activities, so that the public can participate in art and culture activities for free. In the process of project research, we have learned many skills including data collection, data organization, photography, interview records, web page production, communication and cooperation, problem solving, etc. More importantly, we understand the importance of protecting historical memory and cultural heritage and innovation. Such a learning process fit into national curriculum standards at the junior high school level : A: Autonomous action B: Communication and interaction C: Social participation

1. In order to let everyone know more about Lukang's new tourist spot - Hexing Youth Innovation Base , we made a video to introduce and put the video on youtube. 2.Two of our team members are also members of the school club - 'Local Cultural Club', so we also introduce the Hexing Youth Innovation Base to the club students on club's off-campus learning activity. 3.The project website is placed on the school homepage and school Facebook, so that everyone can easily link to our project.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

Through this project study, not only will we have a better understanding of the new life of the old house in Lukang, but we also hope to provide other students of the school, community members and even tourists from other counties and cities through the completed website, so that everyone can walk into the alleys of Lukang , to further explore the story of the old house and see the creativity and inheritance of young people returning home.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Thank you to the nine stores in Hexing Youth Innovation Base. After understanding our intention, they all enthusiastically introduced the products and business philosophy of the store to us, answered many of our questions, and generously let us take photos of the inside and outside of the store. Thank you very much . In addition, in the process of research, in order to better understand the past history of Hexing Police Station, we searched for an article written by Mr. Jingye Zhang(?????,the execution of Lukang Niaozai(???????)), so we asked the teacher to help, and inquired about related questions through Facebook messages. Thank you very much. Finally, in order to know more about the policies and ideas of the Changhua County Government on the Hexing Youth Innovation Base, we contacted Miss Hong from the Cultural Affairs Bureau. Thank you very much for providing us with old photos and answering many questions. Thank you very much. This project shows us that many young people in Lukang are working very hard to preserve the old houses in Lukang and actively promote Lukang tourism. We are deeply moved. In the future, we will also inherit the love and culture of our hometown Lukang.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

We are honored to participate in the International Schools CyberFair Project . At the beginning, we only shared stories about Lukang from the teacher in the history class, which made us feel very interesting, so we were full of curiosity about the project production. Later, when we started to collect relevant information about Hexing Youth Innovation Base, in addition to letting us know more about the past history of Lukang, we also met a group of people who are committed to preserving the good times in the past but more actively creating a new future. And this kind of emotion is something we won't learn in textbooks. Finally, we also hope that through our project, more people are willing to come to Lukang and walk into the alleys to experience the new life of the old house in Lukang.
