4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We are familiar with Mazu pilgrimage since the event is always promoted in the news reports. The temples are extremely lively and crowded. The firework and firecrackers last all night. It is the carnival for gods. Some classmates have even passed under the sedan chairs with the adults and participated in pilgrimage for the blessing. Nevertheless, we were not familiar with the sacred object of pilgrimage, Xiang Dan, and we only knew that the mobile little temple was important. In the interview with the guard of Xiang Dan, he introduced the maker of Xiang Dan and even the mayor and the director of the Department of Cultural Affairs. We successively learned about Xiang Dan and recognized its important value as national cultural asset.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Traditional culture should be cherished and passed on since it is the extension of social value. When searching for the origin, we realized the significance of our existence to construct the future.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In order to accomplish this international Schools CyberFair, we learned and used various strategies, such as mind mapping, Mandala thinking, 4F puzzle reflection, data generalization, etc. We were familiar with simple photographic skills and construction of website. We learned to establish interview outline, questionnaire and statistics and use related skills in the project making courses. In the process, we revised and improved constantly. Through the team members’ specialties and mutual support and assistance, we accomplished our task. The learning by practice, experience and exploration, we grew rapidly and we obtained the experience of teamwork and independent competency.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

Hardware: we borrowed several computers and internet place from the school and each of us borrowed one ipad from the school for the visits and interview out of school. By iPad, we took photos, recorded the images, sound and words. Sometimes we borrowed the parents’ mobile phones to contact each other and transmit the data. Software: 1. We contacted Nanyao Temple, the Department of Cultural Affairs and the city hall and borrowed the related reports and historical objects from the libraries of the school and Changhua County to generalize the information. In addition, after interviewing several important people, we added the description by online related resources. 2. Our contact was based on the task planning of google classroom and we classified data in google driver and we constructed and designed simple webpage by google. 3. The classmates of the team, parents and teachers constructed an online LINE group. Thus, in each visit and interview, we could efficiently contact each other and send the messages. We could provide ideas and suggestions at any time and in any places. Thus, we constructed the connection. Although we were from different classes, our friendship was enhanced.

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

After the students were familiar with the affairs related to Xiang Dan, they not only generalized the data related to Xiang Dan, but also designed the webpage for promotion. They became the ambassadors to preserve and promote local culture. Through experiencing the making of Xiang Dan, students obtained more diverse ideas and creativity. For instance, they designed various kinds of related cultural and creative objects and board games to modernize traditional culture which became approachable for the young generation. Besides, they introduced the board game designed to Grade 1 and 2 students. In addition, from different perspectives of cultural workers, such as teachers, activity participants, the director of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the mayor, the students observed the promotion and implementation of cultural heritage and provided constructive views and suggestions. In the action and practice learning, they successively cultivated cultural citizenship and responsibility. In addition, in the process of interview, many interviewees recognized the significance of the students’ work and they supported them with donation. It was significant support and encouragement.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

In the past, Xiang Dan was sacred, mysterious and not approachable. Although there were numerous participants of pilgrimage, few of them could approach Xiang Dan and even fewer obtained the knowledge. It was stored in the distant place of Nanyao Temple out of the period of the event. However, nowadays, Xiang Dan of Nanyao Temple is listed as the national historical interest and asset. We intend to introduce the historical value of Xiang Dan to the young generation who will recognize the significance of the origin of pilgrimage culture. In the process of searching, we approached local people and things and we interviewed many people who were familiar with Xiang Dan culture. We gradually understood why people were enthusiastic with the annual pilgrimage, the role of local religion in the public life and how it comforted people. After the construction of webpage, the classmates learned from each other. Besides, it was connected with the website of Nanyao Temple as the reference for more community residents and educational authority. Thus, more people would learn about this important cultural asset.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

When we began exploring the history of Xiang Dan, the first helper was the local chief of the village of Nanyao Temple, Mr. Shih. He was one of the guards of Xiang Dan. Through his introduction, we knew Mr. Tsai who guided us in Nanyao Temple and the maker of Xiang Dan and we realized the significant investment of the city hall and the Department of Cultural Affairs on this annual event. Thus, we interviewed the mayor and the director of the Department of Cultural Affairs. By contacting Nanyao Temple, we discovered numerous precious historical objects. Thanks for their assistance to allow us to generalize the culture of Xiang Dan and reorganize the data of precious historical objects which will serve as reference for the following researchers. In addition, we reviewed many resources, such as related news reports and the websites of Bureau of Cultural Heritage and MOC. Besides, our parents and teachers accompanied us patiently in the process and thus we successfully accomplished the construction of the webpage.

5) Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises (Optional)

In the process, we approached the traditional culture and knowledge. Besides, we were impressed that in the past two hundred years, Nanyao Temple persisted in the handing-over of incense in hometown. Although it was a difficult and long journey, in the process, people could ponder on the origin and obtain the energy to cope with future. When we asked the guard of Xiang Dan, the Shih’s family, if they would continue protecting Xiang Dan, the chief Shih replied that they had treated the task as the family mission. Although it was hard work, in each event of pilgrimage, the whole family returned to Changhua from different places to collectively accomplish the mission. We respected their spirit and we should learn from them.
