Project Overview

1. Description of Our Community

Our community is located at the back of Taoyuan Railway Station. Compared to the area in front of the railway station, our community is growing more slowly. Most families in our community are working class so parents here feel that education is important because only with good education can their children have greater chance to be in the upper-class. https://jamiehsia.wixsite.com/weightlifting-coach/general-4

2. Summary of Our Project

The category we choose is Local Leaders. Our project is about a weightlifting coach,Chen Chia-Ling, who has been developing weightlifting in our school, community, and our city. Ms. Chen is a single parent with two children. She trains not only her two children but also some students with poor academic performance to be weightlifters. Because of this move, she allows students with low academic achievement to find a way out. https://jamiehsia.wixsite.com/weightlifting-coach/general-4

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

We encountered two main difficulties when doing this project. First, there were many people to be interviewed for this project, so we had to spend a lot of time after class to arrange all the interviews. For some time, when we encountered interviewees who had to go to the game, we had to postpone the interview. Luckily, because of our perseverance, we ended up completing all interviews by the end of the semester. Second, setting up a website was a new skill for us and we didn’t have time to take class for it, so we learned how to set it up with Google Sites ourselves with online resources. However, after we became familiar with the operation of the system, we found that Google Sites was too monotonous to meet our needs. Then our teacher learned that Wix was another choice for us, so our teacher and us learned all over again how to set up a website with Wix. The process of learning by doing with our teacher was fun. https://jamiehsia.wixsite.com/weightlifting-coach/general-6

5. Our Project Sound Bite

Through this project we got to know a strong woman who lifted the weight of the lives of many young weightlifters.

Project Elements

1) What information tools & technologies did you used to complete your CyberFair project?

To complete this project, we learned many things from the whole interview process. Before the oral interviews, we learned how to write interview questions, the rules of Interview etiquette, and learn to operate video equipment. After the interviews, we learned to cut and edit the video clips with CyberLink PowerDirector. Besides, to set up a website, we learned to use two website builders: Google Sites and Wix. Throughout the research process, we not only learned about weightlifting, but also learned many new skills. https://jamiehsia.wixsite.com/weightlifting-coach/interview-videos

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

Through this project, the students learned about the sport of weightlifting: terminology, equipment, competition rules, and so on. On Dec 10,2021 the research team was hired to host three overseas students, and the research team was responsible for introducing the school's weightlifting coach, weightlifting team and workout base for the overseas students. Through the coach’s instructions and translation from the research team, the coach with the research team became spokespersons for the promotion of weightlifting.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

For a long time, most people in our society believe that only good grades can get ahead. Through this website, most people begin to value the different aspects of each student's ability, and start to know more about weightlifting. On the other hand, this website also let most people know that there is a coach who is working hard for the athletes in the weightlifting world. Ms. Chen, a tough coach, takes care of her own children and a group of young weightlifters, protecting them from getting injure. As the manager of the weightlifting workout base, she unites all the weightlifters, selflessly training every weightlifter in or outside the community.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

To know about the history of the weightlifting workout base in our school, we got the help from the former Director of General Affairs in our school, who is retired now. To gather more about the leadership traits that Ms. Chen have, most teachers in our school were willing to accept our interview. We could not accomplish this project without so many helpers. https://jamiehsia.wixsite.com/weightlifting-coach/interview-videos
