Currently, there are six departments: Peking opera, folk arts, Taiwanese opera, Hakka opera, traditional opera music and theatre art. It is the school to cultivate the talents of traditional opera. In the school, there are museum of drama relics, internship and performance theatre and “Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe” and “Taiwanese variety show troupe” to promote traditional opera arts. Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe has been founded for 15 years and made efforts to pass on traditional opera. With the professional guidance of Director Chen and the actors’ efforts in Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe, they will certainly continue promoting traditional opera and operating for art and culture of Kunqu Opera in Taiwan.

2. Summary of Our Project

Watching traditional opera is many people’s childhood memory in early times. It was the family time between parents and children. When there were local temple fair to worship gods, the performances of traditional operas were indispensable. However, the prosperity did not continue and the main reason is in that nowadays, leisure activities vary and the public are significantly more interested in movies, TV, concerts, stage plays and online media and it severely affects the development of traditional opera. Since art of traditional opera encounters the crisis, the insiders are aware of the problems. After constant reform and attempts in the past decades, they thoroughly improved traditional opera in terms of performance, music, scripts, costumes, props, stages, marketing and promotion. Production and performance of traditional opera were refined to catch up with fashion and the public’s interests.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome

A.It was not easy to fix up the time of visit We had classes on weekdays and the visits were usually on the afternoon of Wednesdays. However, the units, experts and scholars we intended to visit were often not available at the same time. Thus, it was difficult to fix up the time of visit. Fortunately, after constant arrangement, we could visit them to accomplish the project. B.It was not easy to fix up the discussion time in school We worked on the project mostly at noon on the weekdays and on the afternoon of Wednesdays. We sometimes could not participate since there were some activities in class. We often delayed the assignments of the project in order to finish the work of school. Fortunately, with everyone’s persistence and teamwork, we overcame the obstacles and accomplished our research. C.Difficulties in the production of web page After finishing the research content, we would present the result on the web page. The teacher instructed the production of web page in the computer classroom on the afternoon of Wednesday, including web page design, image processing, text editing and content editing. However, as the beginners, we encountered the obstacles. After long-term knowledge acquisition and practices, we finally accomplished the production of web page. D.It was not easy to organize the numerous and complicated data After deciding the topic of the project, we began searching for information related to Kunqu Opera on internet and in the library. Since there was plenty of information, we spent a lot of time reading and generalizing it and successively obtained the key points for more efficient reading.

5. Our Project Sound Bite

We obtained a lot from the project research since we acquired knowledge, expanded the vision and approached more experts and scholars. We learned about use of information, visit and investigation and communication and cooperation. In the process, the most unforgettable was that we accomplished the research report from zero. It had been difficult and we encountered the obstacles. However, we attempted to solve the problems and finish the task. Finally, we aim to produce artistic and vivid web page.

6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

A.It supported language subject By collaborative learning, students made significant progress on expression, communication, planning, presentation, information use, article reading and reorganization. Their competence was particularly upgraded in information collection, writing of research reports, making of briefing, presentation skills on stage and production of web page. B.It supported Arts and humanities subject We transformed the information generalized in research process and the people, things, afterthoughts and photos in the visit of National Taiwan College of Performing Arts, Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe into web page in order to share the results with the public. To introduce culture and art of Kunqu Opera, we invited two classes of Grade 4 students to listen to our briefing of Kunqu Opera. Thus, everyone could easily approach Kunqu Opera and appreciate the traditional beauty of Kunqu Opera. C.It supported information subject By digital cameras, we recorded the people and things visited and by digital pen recorders, we recorded the interview. We searched for information through the network of school and placed the organized information on web page. More importantly, by knowledge and skills acquired to use web page software, we transformed the research result into web page of project to share our joy and acquisition.

We learned to use information and computer knowledge and acquired precious artistic knowledge and the traditional opera experts’ persistence and engagement from the visit and interview. After the research, we recognized that the culture of traditional opera is artistic legacy from the ancestors and we should support and protect it. Thus, with the innovation and operation of Taiwan Peking and Kunqu Opera Troupe, we believe that it can revive traditional opera and develop new opportunities.
